Thanks Norm, and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all the other members. Sorry for the delayed response. Been finishing up packing for another dune trip tomorrow(Wed).

My Breeze even has grab handle to get to the micro/conv outlet. It's held on by two strips of VelcroŽ per side. Could it be any easier? Another reason I love my Sea Breeze. Gotta get the maid to clean up in there.

I can understand a 13 year old oven failiing, but for the vent fan and light not to work points me to an internal fuse or breaker. Of course, it may be since the oven is down, it may not operate these.

I probably won't get into this until Wednesday, just wondering if anyone has had experience like this, have had theirs apart, or worse case senerio, what did you replace it with? Thanks!
There is a thermistor in the power circuit - it is essentially a fuse that goes open once the temperature outside the oven reaches the set value of the thermistor. 130c ? About $20 for a new one... But, that is probably just an indication of another problem. In my case the convection microwave was making a worn out fan bearing sound... We continued to use it, then one day it quit completely. The fix, I replaced a worn out stepper motor that controlled the input and output convection oven doors (small doors either side of the oven that regulate the oven temperature). About $40 in parts and a way better than throwing away an otherwise good convection microwave. Don't chuck it - fix it.

I'm going to open the breaker/EMS panel this morning to check connections and the breaker. Failing that, I'll start dismantling the oven.

Clara was baking a pie (convection only) while I was gone. She told me she burnt the pie up. It was only after she removed the pie and later tried to use the micro that it died.

When I looked at this pie, there were areas burnt totally black and I mean hard as a rock. While other areas were just barely over done. I can only conclude now the oven went caflooy and turned the micro on. I'm 99.99% sure now a new oven is in our future

John...
lol.... mine quit right after the wife baked a pie too ! I bet its the same thermal fuse.

Over the years I've repaired a couple of microwaves by replacing a fuse that goes bad inside the microwave. When the fuse blows all power to the microwave is lost including the blower & light. Usually the microwave does not need to be removed to service the fuse. Typically the fuse is located behind the touch pad. Its either a 15 or 20 amp fuse. It seems the fuse gets weakened over years of use and blows.

Thanks for all the responses, insights and experiences!

The breaker panel and breaker checked out fine. Today I will take it apart with VOM in hand to see where the power ends. I'll check both of the fuses mentioned.

I'm the kinda guy that likes to tinker and learn how things work. If this can be fixed I will fix it, even it it only lasts until we get home in April, or next week

Asked Clare this morning how long she had the pie in there, she said one hour! Had to be a senior moment. Anyway, that points me to the thermal fuse, but I'll check everything.

Does anyone know if micros still have capacitors? Clare said a cousin was killed fixing an unplugged micro.

It was a buttermilk pie with coconut. Me thinks this is a dangerous and costly receipe. Do Not bake one in a convection for one hour!

I don't recall any large caps in my GE JVM1490, even if there was they would dissipate if you let it sit for 30 mins.

Use a low value resistor and short them all out to be sure.

Not looking good for the Home team. The fuse behind the control panel is good. Found 3 thermo switches and all check out fine. Well, one had no power in or out. One when shorted turned on the the vent fan, this kicks on when stove top heats it up enough. So 120v is present and there is 122v going into the control board (just no working controls). Access is really restricted unless the whole unit is removed. The outlet was found behind a speaker panel to the right and above the unit. Had to remove a panel on the adjacent cupboard to find it. A big PITA!

Any last suggestions before I take a sledge hammer to this sucker?

Yes, find an appliance repair shop, smaller shops often keep old models for parts, like auto wreckers, you might get the parts you need there.

Just wondering - Clion51 - did you get your problem with the microwave solved?

I was making pizza last night - using the convection setting at 450. The first three pizzas (little ones) came out great, when I went to put the 4th in there was NOTHING! No light, no vent fan, no control panel. Hubby has checked breakers, fuses, etc. Now he is trying to trouble shoot the innards.

Great . . . didn't need this right now!

I had a few offline conversations with Clion51 on this thread. He ran out of time due to travel and ended up replacing the oven.
If more time was available he may have found the thermal cutout located on the left side of the oven behind the slotted plastic grill. This thing is subjected to all the heat from the oven and fails during convection mode.
It has red and black wires going to it and is mounted to the sheet metal by one small screw. Don't confuse it with any cooking sensors pointing down into the oven. The control panel does NOT need to be removed to gain access to this, just some plastic and then some sheet metal covers. I did not even remove the oven from the cabinet, just lowered it a couple of inches to allow access to all the screws. A Phillips screwdriver is about the only tool needed for the job.
There are other things that can kill the entire microwave but this thing is a prime suspect
Good luck!
