Bob did say he replaced his converter/charger. The Freedom 458 by xantrex is a inverter/charger.

Assuming I am the Bob you refer to, I did install what Xantrex refers to as an "inverter/charger". The Freedom 458 changes the 120 VAC into 12 VDC to charge the batteries, and it does do a fine, well thought out protocol to do so. It also will change the battery power in the RV to 120 VAC to operate equipment, such as the TV of microwave that use up to 2000 watts of power.

I also upgraded from a "converter/charger" to the Freedom 458 "inverter/charger".

The 458 is a modified sine wave inverter. It has worked very well for a number of years now.

Only two times have I had problems with the modified sine wave! Once I tried one of the compact florescent lights (CFL). It lasted about one minute before exploding! The other time I bought a Cuisinart burr coffee grinder from Costco, (I had one in the house and liked it). After putting one in the RV, it only lasted one day so I just put the other grinder back in and returned the new one to Costco. The older one finally gave up the ghost a few weeks ago after a long life, so I bought another on from Costco, It shut off very soon on the 458, twice. I told the co-pilot that they just must not like the Modified SW, she said try it on the generator, and it worked fine. So now, we turn on the generator to grind coffee. We grind about five days of coffee so this gives the generator a exercise.

I left the 600 watt inverter, which was original equipment in my MH, in place when I installed the Freedom 458. I use the 600 watt unit to run the TV's and laptop computer and it's equipment. There has been no problem with the output from that device. If yours is still there, you might give it a try with those fussy devices that don't like the 458.

Mine had no original inverter and those two things are the only problems I have had in eight years, and I full timed for five of those years. TVs, Computers, micro wave/convection oven, compressors, impact wrenches, modems, routers, satellite LNBs, and chargers of all kinds. If and when the 458 gives up, I'll upgrade to a pure sine wave unit... maybe. Depends on cost to replace the unit and its remote.

Wouldn't be without the remote, not even for pure sine wave!
