We have an 03 Tradewinds LTC which has a Cummins 8.3, 350 HP engine that appears to have a diesel drip right above the starter. After talking to a Cummins service place they said the lift pump needs to be replaced to the tune of $1500 including the labor to get it in and out. It is located in a spot where it looks as though not only the starter has to be removed but also part of the exhaust system. You can not see it or reach it from the access hatch in the bedroom so it would have to be done from below. Has anyone done this, if so HOW?? Jim is pretty handy but this looks to be a giant pain-in-the-you-know-what!

Deon & Jim Spangler, Wisconsin but currently in south Texas RV park until end of March.

Older Cummins lift pumps seem to be notorious for leaking...probably resulting from the new diesel fuel used in the last several years. Seems the older pump gaskets dry out and the pump leaks. I don't believe that Cummins makes a seal rebuild kit for these pumps anymore (how convenient), so you will liklely have to replace the pump. Had our 8.3 l/pump replaced July, 2010....total cost about $525 (pump retails for about $300). Although labor rates vary, and your coach may require additional steps at R&R, seems odd that it would cost 3X what ours did. Our Cummins tech had no problem getting at it from the top. Not a difficult repair, but a bit tedious for him due to tight quarters.

Might also make you aware that the #5 injector line on this motor seems prone to leaking over time. Suggest your guys take a looksee when they're in there just to be sure.
