Electric Steps Won't Stay Out

Last summer, we purchased a 2004 Sea Breeze. The only minor issue that we have not been able to correct is that the steps do not stay out when the key is turned off. There is a switch to the left when you go in the door labeled "Steps", but it doesn't make a difference.

Currently, we crawl under the Motor Home and unplug the 12volt plug connecting to the steps to get them to st . We are supposed to be camping this weekend, and it is suppose to be a washout, so that had me wondering about this issue even more.

Does anyone know of how we can correct this issue?

:Welcome:

The switch labeled 'Steps' should make the steps stay out with door open or closed, the ignition should pull the steps in. They should then extend when the door is open, even with the engine running. Sounds like your switch is bad. With a test light or meter I'd see if the switch is working. Also check that the switch in the door frame that has a reed switch and a magnet to activate it is in place.

If you do a Google search online with the name and model of your steps you'll likely find a service manual and lots of information on troubleshooting.

In one position the steps will go in and out with the engine running and will stay out with the engine shut off.

In the other position the steps will go in and out with the engine running or not and the steps will not stay out when the door is closed.

I had a similar problem with ours and it was a bad ground. I pulled the fuse for the steps when we were parked after they were out and when ready to head down the road pulled the fuse with them in. Hope you get it figured out.

Welcome to iRV2.

Sorry you're here with problems .
You haven't mentioned the step manufacturer, but if they are Kwikee this document may help.

If the door switch and the 'Step' switch are O.K., crawl under the front of the RV and pull the 4 wire connector on the control board of the step. Spray it with some contact cleaner, and while you 're there, use silicone to spray every join you see in the step mechanism. (usually about 20-30 movement joints, according to how many steps you have) Be careful, if the steps move they can cause damage to any body part in the way!
