My friends just had an issue on a trip when their fan/alternator belt "disappeared" on their '07 Monaco Cayman. Made me want to check on the status of mine since my coach is 8 years older than theirs (and I have no idea when the belt was changed last).

I lifted the bed to take a look, and found I could only see about a foot of belt (looked good), so what is the best way to verify a good belt? And, does anyone out there know what the belt part number is? (is it a good idea to carry a spare?)

is it something that can be changed on my own, or take it somewhere?

Second question involves the air filter - it appears there is a panel that can be removed in the power cable bay that allows access to the filter. Is the filter changeable on my own (appears to be held in place by two huge hose clamps)?

Thanx for any assistance

I don't own a DP and haven't worked on one. However, whether it is one of the older "V" belts or a serpentine belt, you need to inspect the underside (side that runs on the pulleys). Look for any cracks or pieces missing. If you find any, replace.

This link shows a picture of a good and bad belt, also shows the quality (mileage) difference between a Neoprene belt and an EPDM belt.

Generally speaking, replacing a belt shouldn't take much effort. It's a matter of finding the pulley which adjusts the tension. Just take all the tension off, remove the belt and place. If the pulley system is complex, you may want to draw yourself a diagram before removal so you have no problem getting the new one in the right order. If you can't find a part number, you can take the old belt to a dealer or parts store to have it measured and/or obtain a replacement.

Can't help much with the air filter either but, it sounds like you've found it. Remove the hoseclamps and take a peek. If it's there, remove or move what duct work you need to replace the filter. Hopefully someone will chime in with more specific info.

The air filter is behind that panel and after you loosen up the clamps it comes out in pretty easy. Unlike most air filters, you replace the whole cannister. Make sure you put the new in with the drain holes down.
Bought the filter at my local Freightliner, don't recall the price, but it wasn't too much.

Never tackled the belts, but there are others on here who have. If you decide to do it could you post how you were able to accomplish it. Pics would be nice.
