Generator Issues

Friends have an 01 National Marlin with Onan diesel 7500 genny has quit producing power. Flashes power occasionally but only last few seconds. We are on a trip and their dash air doesn’t work. Trip home in a few days is looking hot and miserable if we can’t find an easy fix...

Any suggestions?

More info needed. Does it keep running? Does it sound like it's keeping up the rpms?

If it flashes power off and on I would suspect a loose connection somewhere. If it were a fuse or circuit breaker it would not flash off and on.

Check all the connections for looseness or corrosion. Aaaaah, don't have it running when you do this. Could get re volting.

It could also be the switch that switches between shore power and genset not seating properly.

Does everything run normally on shore power?

What error code is showing? After the generator shuts down, press the start stop button on the generator 3 times. The light will blink one, two, or three flashes. Press the start stop button one more time. The error code will flash a two digit number. I.e. flash flash pause flash is 21. There will be. A longer pause and the code will repeat.

Rattling sound could be something loose. Again, check connections.

Let us know the error code(s). The rattling sound before failure and flashes of power could be slip rings or something loose. Try resetting the main breaker on the generator itself. I doubt it will help but it’s easy to try just in case.

On the generator itself there should be a start stop switch. There should be a light built into that switch. Red square.

What model is your generator? Should be something like HDKAJ7500.

Thank you all for you input. They were able to chase the issue today and found the belt lose and some lose connections. With those corrected it is generating power as it should!
