Generator will not turn off by inside switch

I own a 2006 Tropical LX T350 with a Onan Quiet Diesel 8000 generator. From inside the coach I can start the generator just fine. The internal switch will not work to shut it off. I need to go outside and use the generator mounted switch to turn it off. I have cleaned the wiring harness at the generator connection and it appears to look okay. I looked at the back of the switch and did not see any loose connections. Does anyone know how to check the connections with a volt meter or do you have a wiring diagram for this switch? I had no idea a single switch could have this many connections. I have attached an image of the back of my inside switch and the wiring harness connection at the generator.

check continuity from switched to genny with a test light.

Mine would not start from inside but shut off fine, it was control board,,

I had bought a donor genny for 400 bucks.. well worth it for, starter, control board, carb I needed, mine is gas but wiring logic is similar..

Still got the rest of unit, it had bad magneto pick up.. Mine had low hours..

The Onan logic uses a momentary connection between battery + and either the start connection wire or the stop connection wire, if there is a break or bad connection in the stop wire it would cause this behavior, the same if their is a fault in the switch.

Does anyone know what terminal position on the back of the rocker switch is the stop connection and what color wire? This will allow me to perform a continuity check before I replace a switch that I doubt is the problem.

If it's a Carling brand switch you can easily take it apart and clean the contacts. Had to do that with a few of the switches in our 04 HR. Don't loose the spring inside.

I replaced the carling switch, but this did not solve my problem. The generator starts and runs fine using the inside switch on the dash, but will not shut off from inside. I have to shut it off by the switch mounted on the generator outside. Does anyone have a wiring diagram of the Onan 8000 or know what wire (color) I need to interrupt?

Your problem is in the Harness that plugs into your Generator - disconnect that plug at your Genny and plug it back in - plug looks like this

Do you have a second switch for the generator inside the coach and does it work? If not it could be the connector plug under the coach that runs to the genny.

The connector plug next to the generator is the first thing I tried and cleaned the contacts. The wiring diagram should be a big help and I’ll try to trace and troubleshoot the wiring tomorrow. Thanks for everyone’s help.

Fixed! I could not have solved it without the wiring diagram provided by Ret Syntst. Once I knew what wire position the Stop signal was on the outside generator connector, I was able to trace the wire to the switch. The colors did not match the wiring diagram, but the connector positions did. It turned out to be a severed stop wire between the generator connector next to the generator and the inside rocker switch.
