The rule about stopping for gas or food applies to pretty much any big city. As a local, you know the bad pockets, but as visitor, I might get off at the wrong place.
I avoid big cities, not because of crime, but because of traffic. Coming up I-44, I got off in Jefferson, MO and take US60 across to Sikeston, MO. There's very little traffic on it.
From there, you can continue on US60 to I-24 and then the Western Ky Parkway. The only thing to worry about is the US60 bridges over the Mississippi and Ohio at Cairo, IL are
very narrow, so it might be more relaxing in a motorhome to take I-57 to I-64. That route would be 57 miles long than going through St. Louis.
