Hi all

I have a 1997 Tropical - Ford Chassis.
Does anyone know where the factory solar panel (mounted on the front air conditioner) wires actually connect to the batteries.
I would like to install a controller and would like to tap into the wires from the solar panel as close to the batteries as possible. My batteries are under the entry step.

Thanks

Does your 12v fuse/breaker panel have a breaker for the solar panel? If so, you might check your panel output there and tap in for a controller nearby. The other end of the breaker will connect to the battery circuit which you can verify with a meter. I replaced my factory panel with a 50 watt panel because the wiring was adequate but the little OEM panel was worthless. I put a controller between the breaker and the panel and removed the diode at the roof because the controller has a built-in diode. I wired the panel indicator light to the controller so I can see when the panel is charging.

On mine the OEM solar panel was tied in at the 12v fuse panel. It had it's own fuse.
The wiring is to small to install anything much larger than the OEM panel.

My Dolphin had 14 gauge wire to the roof which is more than adequate for the 4.3 amp max output from a 50 watt panel. Even 18 gauge is good for up to 10 ft. per the rating table.

Nominal 12v panels usually put out 17 to 18 volts on load and up to 21 or 22 open circuit.

Thanks for all of you inputs.

I think I have a handle on this now as long as I can find the right fuse for the OEM panel. Doesn't look like it shows up in my vehicle or chassis manual in the fuse panel diagram.
