Get service records if possible.
Get engine ser # and call Cat help line and see what service work was done by
any Cat dealer.
Find out if the required valve adj has been done to the engine.
Just a few things

Generally speaking, the Tradewinds is a very popular model or so it seems. Our Tropical is not a diesel and a couple of years older but we are quite happy with the quality of build. It was neglected when we got it so it took awhile to get it back up to speed but I am pretty convinced that a lesser quality vehicle would have been in far worse shape.

With the 350 HP engine it is the LTC which is the higher end TradeWinds. I have had my 2001 TradeWinds since 2004 and have never regretted buying it. National built a quality unit. Just take a look at the RV sales lots and see if you can find a National product (gas or diesel), seldom will you find one. I'd just do the usual things like tires, service history, batteries, look over the ceiling really good for stains which could mean a water leak. Take it for a ride and if possible run it up a long hill and watch the temp gage.

The guy sold it yesterday. He got $48k for it. Guess I'll keep looking?
