Second stage heat pump air conditioner

I have a 2004 Dolphin 6355. It has a heat pump. When running the air conditioner with the 7 kw Onan generator the second stage does not come on. Is there a switch anywhere, or maybe something else could be wrong.

Thanks
Gary

Gary I dont know about yours specifically but on my dolphin there is a switch in the power cord compartment that selects between 30 and 50 amp service. If I am on 30 amp the switch is turned down and on 50 it is up. On 30 amps my second stage does not come on. Good luck.

Second stage heat pump air conditioner

Thanks for the help but my 6355 has a 50 amp cord and 50 amp plug. The 30 amp/50 amp switch that you are talking about is not there. When I look at the breaker panel, in the compartment in front of the entry door, it has a 30 amp main breaker. Then when I look at the electrical panel by the bathroom it has a 50 amp main breaker. This does not make sense. Any more ideas?

Gary

The switch I have is in the left rear compartment. I also have a 50amp cord and plug. I roll my cord up in that compartment and sometimes hit ir with the cord.

Gary my next suggestion would be to look at the gen circuit breakers. Trip them off and try again. Some breakers dont trip all the way so trip them off and reset. Let us know my curiosity is up.

Gary,

My '06 5355 has the same switch as Dagwood mentioned. If it is in the 30 amp position only the first compressor will come on. Also, if the temperature difference you are trying to cool is 2 degrees or less the unit will not turn on the second compressor. One way to tell if both are running is when the unit first turns on is to set the temperature to cool more than two degrees then go out side and listen to the fan/compressor. Only one unit will initially start then in about one minute the out door fan will stop for a second then it starts up the second compressor. Greg

Gary On second thought if your ac 2nd stage will work when you switch back to shore power then it is not the switch but something on the gen or transfer switch. After using the gen have you tried it again on shore power?
By the way the 30 amp switch we are talking about is for the occasions when you only have 30 amps available. You would need an adapter cord to go from 50 to 30 amps. Then you would need to switch from 50 to 30 in your power cord compartment. My switch is on the rear wall right by the phone and cable hookups. It is a small metal box with a switchplate on it for on and off. There are no visible wires connected to it and except for having been shown this on the walk through I would not have a clue just from appearances.
When you are on 50 amp service ther are two 50 amp wires in the cord. When on 30 amps you get one 30 amp leg so you have less than half tje electrical power. That means you have give up some of your eletric appliances for simultaneus use. On 30 amps I would also not use the electric water heater or the frig on electric if the ac was going.
I hope some of this helps and if you already know all this stuff sorry about the long post.

Gary, I would go look at my 04 Dolphin if I were at home right now, but alas I am not, so I am relying on my feeble mind, LOL. I have a 7kw Onan generator and I believe it has two breakers on the front of the generator, perhaps only the secondary breaker has tripped which usually only supplies one large load on a 50 amp coach without power management. That load might be your second stage AC compressor on your heat pump. Might be worth a look.
