Speedometer

My speedometer quit working. When traveling, it tends to jump around and is not accurate With the ignition off it settles to approximately 10 mph
Any suggestions on where to look?

Uh, thanks for the reply but I'm sure it's something I need to diagnose and try to repair here.

Install a VMSpc and use it for speed.

I can read my speed off of my GPS. That's not the problem. I would like to fix my speedometer.
I'm looking for someone who knows the mechanics of the speedometer.

You asked a rather vague question in that there are 2 totally different kind of speedo's. Mechanical and electronic.

You also didn't mention what vehicle you're dealing with.

Mechanical speedo's have a cable that runs from the transmission to the back of the speedo head.

The second is electronic. It uses sensors to compute speed.

If it's mechanical, the problem could be the cable or the speedo head and on occasion the speedo gear on the end of the speedo cable. If it's electronic then the issue could be a multitude of things gone wrong including damaged wires, bad sensors, bad ECU, bad electronic speed circuit board..
