I can't find the article now, but K&N has said that if a properly oiled K&N filter passes any dirt or dust, it is so fine that it doesn't harm the engine. I can run a black glove down my intake tube and it comes out black with no signs of dirt or dust on it. Some of the engines in these $150,000 toys are twin turbo making over 1,200 HP. Would they be risking their engines on an air filter that didn't work?

In a word YES.
They let more air in as well as fine dust. There are numerous tests on the internet that show that.
I was looking to us on of their new ones for MH's & class 8 trucks. They tole me they were 92-99% as effective as the stock one. Even 1% more is double the dust as the stock filter.
I used them on my racing motorcycles, but I rebuilt the engine every season anyway.

On the RV I just sold, I put in a K&N filter and I did increase my mpg a little and did notice that it seem to have more power. I have a screaming eagle harley that is fast and I went from 38 mpg to 42 mpg. Just my 2 cents.

As far as the K&N filters, it's not the dust that is the problem. It's that some owners over oil the filter after cleaning it, the oil gets to the MAF and causes problems.

I can see performance guys trading short term horsepower gain for long term engine wear, yes. I don't think the point of the K&N system is better filtering. I think the point of K&N is adequate filtering and better airflow.

Mearslp,
Do you run your generator when you park? It probably uses gas from the same tank, and that would ruin your average MPG.
Just a thought,
Tom
