tag axle

I have a 1997 35' dolphin with a tag axle. In California there are signs on the freeway that say "Trucks with 3 or more axles 55 mph speed limit." Am I subject to that limit when I am not towing another car? That tag axle is kinda bugging me. They charge me $25 dollars to cross bridges in the Bay Area when towing a vehicle. Chalk another one up to financial death by a thousand cuts.

Move to Texas. Problem: fixed.

In a lot of places, those rules are only for commercial, but that's my only help.

I too have a tag axle, I follow the restrictions for number of wheels or axles. Can't go wrong if you fair to the safe side.

No, we are considered a motor coach and are not restricted to the 55 MPH limit when not towing. At least that is the way I understand it, never been stopped by CHP. However, we are restricted to the two right lanes on a multi-lane hiway, go figure. We also are restricted from traveling in some of the toll lanes, such as on the 91 freeway in southern CA., towing or not.
