My 2003 Dolphin L/X has the RCA RTDVD1 home theater system that has given me trouble just after the warranty. It plays a DVD for about an hour and then everything freezes up. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the cure? I suspect overheating since there is very little venting. My coach doesn't have open shelfs for the stereo equipment. Everything is behind the plastic facia. I want to build my own shelving. Can anyone post a picture of the open shelving use on later models?

Have you ever tried using a disk cleaner? The system does need regular cleaning, also can you leave the door ajar when in use. I do this to allow more cooling air into the cabinet.

I always leave the door up when watching the TV. However, the plastic facia around all the components does not leave any room for air circulation. Also, the surround sound only works when playing a DVD. Haven't tried a disc cleaner yet.

Fred, I previously owned a '03 Dolphin with the RCA system and the one at home is the same model. While we sold the '03, our home system is doing the same thing on my home burned travel DVD's, commercial ones work OK. I also believe it is heat issue as the disks are very hot when ejected. I finally got feed-up and use an inexpensive DVD player for home burned items.

I believe with the NRV's use of the FM Modulator only the DVD's will activate the surround sound system. BTW my '05 doesn't use the modulator, but DVD's are required for the surround system. If a "Stereo" CD is used only the front speakers are utilized.

Thanks Fred. I've got to get the components out and see if I can rewire the system. All DVD's act up in mine. I have a Sony system in the house and it works great. I'm considering eliminating the VCR in the motorhome. By the way, It looks like we live in neighboring cities.

I'm on my third home theater system in my Tropical, the first two were RCA provided my National, both failed to power up. The first one National replaced so I didn't get to troubleshoot. The last one blew a cap in the power supply, probably heat related. The compartment gets pretty hot in the summer. I replaced the last unit myself with a Sony from my house, Had a hard time finding a system to fit (depth). I now use a cheap fan (wal-mart) to ventelate the compartment, my direct tv and HTS run real cool now. Probably won't be an issue this winter.

The surround sound works afterall. After four years of owning the motorhome I figured it out. I had National RV e-mail a schematic of how the stereo components are wired. After studying them I inspected all the connections and everything was in place. The audio out jacks on the tv are connected to the VCR in jacks on the DVD theater system (just like my home system) which means sound should be coming out of the theater system speakers if the source on it showed VCR. No sound though. I then I went to the audio menu on the TV and selected "output and speakers" and then selected "fixed output - speakers off" instead of "variable output - speakers on" and BINGO, the sound comes out of the DVD theater system speakers whether I'm using the antenna or cable.

Fred you figured out what I wasn't able. The electronic goodies just get more complicated, eventhough all the sales people say it's so simple. I was amazed how many people cannot properly install a HD TV system. Just another excuse for me to pass on HD for some time.

Yes we are just across the hills from each other, several of my shop mates lived out your way.

Fred and Bonnie,

I tried to contact you via your email on your profile and it bounced back as undeliverable. Does your 2005 model have plastic facia in front of your home theater components or does it have open shelves? If open shelves, I was wondering if I could set up a meet with you to see how National did it. I want to duplicate it. Go to my profile and let me know.. Thanks

Fred:
My 2003 LX has the same problem hmmmmm. However, I did change out the DVD to a Sony, and added a muffin fan with a trip switch added to the door. At least whenever we have any of the units on the door remains open and the fan runs. Closing the door turns off the fan.

Wow, I just noticed the dates on these posts, guess I pretty late!!

Bob,

If your TV audio output RCA jacks in the back are hooked up to the VCR/TV audio input jacks of your DVD player then you will have surround sound if you go to the audio menu on the TV and select "output and speakers" and then select "fixed output - speakers off" instead of "variable output - speakers on"(you might need a mirror and flashlight to see the jacks). Next change the funtion on the DVD player to VCR/TV and you'll have surround sound whether you are on cable, antenna or satelite.
