Engine braking may be an optional feature on your coach. There should be an on/off switch if so equipped.

The Allison transmission provides for optimum retarding downshift operation. When the exhaust brake is turned ON, your foot is removed from the throttle pedal and the service brake is depressed, the transmission will immediately pre-select a lower gear. The transmission then starts to down-shift through gears to reach the pre-selected gear. Down-shifting occurs at a higher speed than is usual when the exhaust brake is not turned on. This allows the exhaust to provide the maximum retarding power.

Im U, thanks for the response. Yes I have a switch and have read how it is supposed to work but mine was not. I just replaced the exhaust brake (valve) and was wondering if the Exhaust brake can be tested without moving? My gear indicator does not show it is working when the tranny is down shifting (high gear is always on) The indicator will show lower gears when I manually move down. So I am trying to figure out if the If the solenoid, throttle position sensor or some other thing is what is not working correctly.

Thx Ted

Great question and I’m no mechanic but I’d like to know the answer too. Have you reached out to Red Bay or Freightliner? I’m going through our manuals and signed up for Freightliner‘s course but don’t think that will help you. I simply read through some manuals I found online to offer what I read.
