I recently purchased a 2002 Phaeton. Unfortunately it did not thave the manuals and the ones I have been able to get from Tiffan are not complete. I have a Coleman Mach 2 zone thermostat. Zone 1 & 2 work with the AC. With heat only zone 2 works. Any ideas?

The #1 unit may not have a heat strip?

Our 2003 35RH Phaeton has front thermostat wired to control the a/c; but on the heat side if the desired temp is different than ambient by over two degrees it does LP furnace as first choice. Within the two degrees of difference it runs the selected heat source (LP furnace or Roof heat pump). However the rear thermostat ONLY selects a/c to cool or heat pump to heat. It will NOT ever control the LP furnace.

Hopes this helps.

I also have a 2002 Phaeton (MDL 38OH) and have had some recent experience that may help. I purchased my unit in July 2009 so I’ve been in a learning mode. My unit has 2 Coleman Mach roof units w/ heat strips (Model 8535) and 2 LP furnaces (I believe this was a common configuration). Pull the inside cover off of your roof units and you should be able to find a sicker with the exact model number. This web site www.rvcomfort.com/rvp had all the manuals I needed for download. This should help you identify if your unit has or is capable of adding a heat strip.

When my unit was new, it had 1 thermostat that controlled both zones but was later modified to use 2 separate thermostats (1 for each zone). I found all this out while I was at Red Bay for service just before Christmas last year and happened to meet the technician that had modified my coach a few years ago.

I’ve had issues with both zones and in each case replacing the thermostat resolved my problems (hey it was 8 years old so I expected some issues to surface). In both cases the thermostat seemed to be functioning properly until I got into metering each leg in the circuits and found failures. In the bedroom the digital display was flaking out which affected everything in that zone and in the living room the LP furnace never came on. Also because there is a heat strip, if I select ELEC-Heat on my thermostat and there is a 5 degree or more difference between the room temperature and the set temperature the LP furnace will be activated in addition to the electric heat until the set temperature is reach the first time.

Both the folks at Tiffin and at RVComfort have been very helpful when I’ve called.
