37AP or Tag?

My decision process continues! Arghh! Is there a dramatic difference in handling between a non-tag and tag? Wrestling with the ability to get into some state/national parks (37AP) or the advantages of a tag axle MH. Any real world experts out there??

With a tag ... much better ride and handling when traveling, For low speed maneuvering in tight quarters, a lifting tag axle is the cat's meow, shortens up the turning radius to that of a non tag coach.

Are you asking about comparing the 37AP to a 45 Tiffin Bus, or a shorter coach with Tag which Tiffin does not make? The longer, heavier tag axle coach will always ride better with a tradeoff of being too big for some parks.

Think only you can define what you mean by 'dramatic', you'll have to drive both to see the difference.

There is no perfect coach that does everything, it's always a tradeoff. Longest wheelbase tags on independent front suspensions will ride the nicest, but you'll probably find you have to enjoy paved pull thru campgrounds, with close views of your neighbors. If you are parked all the time as a winter getaway, then driving doesn't matter much at all.

For that matter if you leave the coach somewhere, or only make one trip a year to the winter grounds, then you should consider a gas. Why pay a premium for a diesel unit that is going to sit somewhere.

Personally we prefer a more woodsy camping experience at state, local, county parks where we are further away from the next camper. That can take some maneuvering on tight access roads and backins. Couldn't fit a tag into most of the places we've been, some I could have easily gotten a tag in. There is much more availability of shorter sites, than longer sites. Our coach drives great and it's a nice comfortable ride, wife even drives. Not as nice as a tag though, if the ride is your primary consideration.

Many state and local campgrounds can be 30 amp only, we've been in some that were 20 amps. The larger the coach, the more power it needs for heat or AC. It can be done, just have to work harder at it. I looked last year at all of the sites we were at in our travels, and 70% of the time we were at a 30amp max site.

Also consider where and how you are going to store it. I can store mine in my driveway so I have easy secure access and can care for it. I couldn't get a tag up my driveway, so I'd have to rent a storage unit and the closest one available is an hour away from me. If you are fulltime, then this isn't necessarily a consideration.

So figure out how you intend to primarily use the coach, and then optimize the coach for your use profile. Don't try to fit/restrict your use into a coach you bought, you'll be unhappy.

Lt Dan: Yes, I am looking at a 37AP Bus or a few years' old 43 Bus. I don't think I want to go 45'. I took a 2014 37AP for a drive and it was light years ahead of my
A.C.E. as far as handling and comfort is concerned. Never driven a tag.

Kiawah: Thanks to both of you for your input. Kiawah, your points are well taken. We prefer the 'separation' factor that most of the sp/np provide also. My DW does NOT like the field type of RV parks out there where it's more like a parking lot atmosphere. Sometimes unavoidable though!
