If you do not have an easy fill system then a turky baster and YES< Distilled, nothing else
Fill to just below the split ring (Bottom of the filler tube) say 1/8 inch or so.

Doesn't hurt to check that water once a month especially in hot weather, probably won't need it that often but if you check it that often you will never run the water down to the top of the plates. You can also get a battery water bulb filler from a auto parts house that will last longer than a turkey baster, but the baster does the same thing.

If your batteries are several years old and/or you dry camp a lot, you may need to add water more frequently because the charger has to work harder to keep the batteries charged. I would start out checking them every couple of weeks. If it looks like the water level is staying fairly constant, you can extend the time between checks.
Last year before we replaced our batteries, I was adding water every 10 days to 2 weeks. I replaced the batteries about 6 or 7 months ago and just added water for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

New rig, check at least once a month.. Once you know how often they need refill check at like 1/3 that period. I used to have to fill mine annually but suddenly they want every six months. But I'd start with monthly checks on a new modern rig.
If your converter is an older single stage, Say Magnetek 6300 or Parallex 7300 (NO T) then every week.

Also consider your climate. Here in Vegas we have just gone through a period of 2 to 9% relative humity. Drys them out rather quickly. I use a turkey baster type bulb you can get at any auto parts and use only distilled water.
