Battery question. Chassis vs house
Hi. We have a 2016 allegro red 37pa. I can't find any indication on the chassis battery if they are 6v vs 12v.
The house batteries are indicated 6v.
Just thinking about the right charger to use.
Anyone know about the chassis battery voltage? Is it two 12v or two 6v combined to 12v?

Two 12vdc in parallel.
Even if they were 6vdc battery in series you would use a 12v charger. Treat a 6v pair in series like a single 12v battery.

The 2015 RED's came with a little 1.5 amp chassis battery trickle charger, that is plugged into a socket in the electrical bay. Up where the diesel engine warmer plug is.
Don't know whether that was changed in 2016 or not, but you should check...you may already have one.

If your storage location isn't powered, how is it that you intend to use some other charger?
Is it that you are going to start your own generator, and you want a larger than trickle charger to charge up the chassis batteries? If so, you could just start your engine which has 160 amp alternator which will charge them back up pretty quickly.

You can tell if the batteries are 6 or 12 volt by looking at how they are wired. If there's a lead from one Neg to the other positive then that's in series and they would be 6 volt. If the Pos is wired to the other Pos and Neg to Neg then its in parallel and they would be 12 volt batteries. I think its rare not to have label somewhere on the battery stating its voltage and other specs.

I have the same rig. 2016 37 PA. I use a Battery Minder to keep the chassis batteries up. Our rig did not come with one. Don't keep it connected when you are off shore power and not driving. There is a slight drain if you leave it connected. The chassis batteries will go dead without some means of charging.

Thanks for all the info. Our site is unpowered. I use a solar trickle charger/minder to keep the chassis battery charged. Good news is, our storage area is opening up a new powered section. Bad news is, it's 70 more a month. Bummer. 😄

For $70/month I would have solar doing the battery charge maintenance...

Unless you have a lots of snow sitting on the roof I agree with Vince, get a solar system. But make sure it gets done well. Many good threads on that.

$70 a month for electric hookup?
If you store the rig for 6 months you could buy new batteries every year for that much money.

Agree. I am just thinking/worried about block heater in cold weather. You need higher output 110 to really manage that. Right?
If not, shut her down for the winter and wait for spring.
I need to read the manual on cold starting the gen-set.

You don't need the block heater plugged in unless:
1. The temperatures are approaching 0 degrees and
2. You plan to start and drive the motorhome somewhere.
You really can just let it all just sit there and cold soak unless you really have a need to start and drive it somewhere.
