Check Engine Light

Went out this morning to move the coach and had a Check Engine, DEF Regen, and MIL light displayed. The Check Engine and Regen light have gone off but the MIL light is still lite. Cannot find anything in my documentation that explains what this is.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Ron

MIL = Malfunction Indicator Light. Get someone to hook a code reader to it and find out the specific code causing the light. Most auto parts will do it for free, then you can Google the code and find out what's going on.

Here is the procedure from the Power Glide manual to pull the trouble codes. After you retrieve it, call Tiffin chassis support with the code and they can help you. Did you wait until the "Wait to Start" lamp (grid heater) went out to start? That can throw a trouble code if you start too quick. The above post may or may not work. The diesel has a J1939 port, not an OBD like a gas engine so they may not have the equipment to read it.

Retrieve active fault codes using the following steps:
1. Simultaneously press both buttons at the base of the speedometer – release when you see “Setup” appear on the screen
2. Use the button labeled “Next” (left side) to scroll down the menu
3. Stop when “Active Fault Codes” is highlighted
4. Press the button labeled “Select” (right side)
5. Two pieces of information will be displayed
a. SPN followed by a 3 or 4 digit number
b. FMI followed by a 1 or 2 digit number
Provide these two pieces of information to a Tiffin phone tech, or the nearest Cummins authorized repair location for guidance on how you should proceed.

Cummins APP

You can also download the Cummins Engine APP that tells you what the trouble codes are. We used this to troubleshoot a DEF sensor on our 2107 Allegro Bus

There is some discussion on the TRVN about problems with the sending units on the early 2018 Tiffins with DEF. Apparently they fail and Tiffin has been replacing them. The problem was allegedly corrected in the later 2018s in June but the rest of us are left wondering when ours will fail.
Get the codes and call Gary Harris at Tiffin.

DEF Sensor Failures

We had the DEF Sensor fail on our 2017 Allegro Bus. The DEF lights and MIL lights were both on. I went into the Fault Codes readout on the dashboard and called Tiffin service with the Codes. There was an easy test that could be performed to validate that the Sensor had failed. As it turns out there was a bad batch of sensors and many of the 2017 and early 2018's had sensor failure. We replaced ours in early August and the new one has ben working fine - Fingers Crossed.

is there a way to determine the build date from the VIN or Serial Number?

Yes and a quick call to Tiffin and they can decode it for you and give you the build date.
