DEF Fill question

Hi all, just added DEF at the pump for the first time in my Red. The tank/fill is in the basement next to the electrical. I had a hard timing getting the nozzle in and could barely get it to flow. I had to put the nozzle at an angle over the door arm. Is this normal? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Often the designers and builders never try to use the RV in real-life situations. There are some RVs that have the DEF fill tank on the side opposite most diesel pumps are set up for. Many folks fill a container then use a battery powered pump to fill their DEF tank. Not convenient, but it gets the job done.

Yes that arm is a PIA and makes it very hard to fill DEF either at the pump or from a bought (wal-mart) 2.5 gal jug.

I have some times disconnected the arm when filling to make it easier

I donít know if this will be of help, but I use this offset funnel on my Duramax.

Mine is on the passenger side rear so at a truck stop I have to pull in opposite the normal flow of traffic. I try not to get in the way of the trucks or cause a traffic issue but when it’s busy sometimes I just move on. Trying to fill from the 2 1/2 gallon containers is a chore unless I take the door support rods off which I don’t care to do every time. I’m still searching for a flexible spout long enough to reach but no luck so far. You’ve got lots of company in this it seems to me...

A Google image search shows lots of "long necked flexible funnels." With one of these, I'd then go to a local home improvement store and buy a length of plastic or vinyl hose to clamp on the spout and make the hose as long as you need. You could hook the funnel on the support rod or the top edge of the open compartment door and fill the DEF tank. I'd also take a photo of your assembly and send it to Tiffin. Maybe they'll improve future models.

I tried using the DEF pump for the first time twice on this last trip, and worked it out just find. But it takes a bit of work so I only do it if the pumps are really busy. Fill the diesel tank first, then pull the MH forward so that the door with the DEF is ahead of the pump. Make sure when you pull in that there is room for the door to open w/o hitting anything. This way the pump and hose are in front of the pump and I can angle the nozzle above & around the support. A bit of an angle, but it has worked fine. I'm trying to avoid the funnel as I don't want to store it w/DEF and I don't want any impurities in the DEF. Oddly enough, I found the pump easier than trying to prop the 2/5 gallon jugs around the door support and tilting it up far enough to get the last out of the jug.

I fill using Walmart DEF, at my convenience at CG or home.

Here's the trick I use, save one of the plastic flexible tubes so you use two tubes. It initially takes a little juggling to figure out how to hold everything, but once you do it it will be 2nd nature.

Attach the first flexible tube to the DEF container as normal. Insert the end of that tube, into the 2nd tube. Lift the DEF container off the ground to level with the tank, and insert the end of the 2nd tube into the tank opening. Now move your left hand to hold the two tubes together so they don't come apart, and with your right hand lift the jug up so it drains. I find this a lot easier than messing around with trying to use a funnel.

I typically put two jugs in at a time, so I have the two tubes that are needed.

Just put two of the hoses that come with the 2.5 gal def together, it works great, I cut the end off one and tape them together so the donít separate while filling. I have side swing doors and set the container on top of the door
