Local trucking company bought 4 new semi tractors. Cost him $30,000 in the first 3 months for things that were not covered under warranty. He called up the dealer where he had traded in his old trucks for these new ones, and asked if he still had his old trucks. Dealer said yes, so he went back down and got his old trucks back and left the new ones. I don't think they have the bugs worked out on this one yet...

There is another thread DEF Additive where this is being discussed. I have no first-hand knowledge, but the only negative comments seem to be from people who don't actually have diesels that use DEF.

DEF has been used in Europe for several years, so the technology is not new. In my mind, the biggest problem is the higher initial cost.

We initially had a problem caused by a faulty cap / neck on our DEF reservoir. Seems there are two sensor / senders in there that monitor temperature and vacuum levels in the container - ours were both installed backwards! Replaced; engine works as advertized. Very quiet (except for increased turbo whine when hot) and very, very clean. Lots of power too. We're happy - this is our 3rd, and best DP to date by the way.

To date I have no complaints. This is our first diesel and I love the idea that there is absolutely no diesel smell coming out of the tailpipe.

I have heard a lot of the truck guys swear they get MUCH better MPG with the DEF unhooked and DPF (diesle partical filter) removed. Some have even said that when the engine get into their "Cycle" you can see the fuel gauge moving from the extra fuel put into the exh.
Of course to do this you have to get a tuner box.

Mine has worked perfect and I love not having the toad full of black soot every day.

Mine works great. The 2011 I have has 20 more HP because all of the EGR plumbing has been removed. No smoke either and nice clean tail pipe.

Anyone who thinks you can remove the DEF system and converters is wrong. Or they are some kind of engineer capable of reprogramming their electronics. Oh - and it is illegal.

We recently traded a 2007 Phaeton with a 350 CAT for a new 2011 44 foot Allegro Bus with a 450 Cummins and the DEF system. Although it only has about 1300 miles, we are averaging about 9.5 MPG as compared to about 7.5 with the Phaeton and the lack of soot on the tailpipe is amazing.

I almost wish the generator used the DEF, since we run it a lot on football weekends.

I went to some trouble to get about the last coach of the tag QBH model with the NON DEF engine.

These days what I'm hearing is that the cap system along with the hose routing is MOST of the negative stuff. TMH has some issues with their tank system supplier apparently cuz many of the coaches have cap and hose problems which can cause relatively major faults to occur, like as in tanks swelling up, caps plugging with crystals, engine faults and loss of power, that sort of thing. It's not just TMH with this kind of issue that crops up on SOME of the coaches, and it for sure isn't all of the coaches.

I haven't heard anybody rational that actually will state they get the "estimated " 9-10 percent better fuel economy with the new engine. They do run clean on particulates, but so will a properly tuned '07 type DP engine.
One thing that bothered me was all the plumbing, complexity, weight, and loss of cargo space with the new engine system. Not much we can do about it though. It's here, get over it?

Our 2011 Allegro Bus has the DEF system. When we first saw it at the dealer it has a "check engine light" which they traced to the DEF system. After almost three weeks of "troubleshooting" by an outside Diesel service facility they replaced the entire DEF tank. Replacing the sensor didn't correct the problem.

Since then the only "downside" is having to buy DEF fluid at about $ 5/gallon. It uses about 2 gallom of DEF per 100 gallon of Diesel. The mileage on this coach is about 10% better than our last coach which was 5,000 # lighter. A Cummins rep said that the increased mileage is normal.

As to the earlier posts about soot and smoke. Unless you are talking about 10+ year old engines or engines with 500,000+ miles you shouldn't be getting ANY soot or smoke - unless someone has tinkered with the fuel pumps or turbos.

The $5 per gallon for DEF; truck stops are starting to carry DEF and pricing is somewhere around 1/2 that.
I have a Ford 350 with DPF and DEF and my biggest hastle is when it is cleaning the DPF it surges the turbo to raise the exhaust gas temp. And as it my DD I only drive it 12 miles each way to work during the week. 2 miles from my destination it decides it is time to clean itself.
With a vehicle being driven a couple hundred miles at a time I would think it should work fine.
