The Wally replays using the remote and I have never seen one with IR remotes. Both of mine are RF remotes that will work from anywhere inside or around the coach.
Watching a recorded program and recording another is possible on the Wally with any antenna. With a Trav'ler or RFMogul, you can record two shows at once while watching a recorded program, or watch one and record another live. You do have to add an external drive and there is a $40 one time setup fee. I added solid state drives to mine since there are no moving parts to bounce around and they draw minimal power.

The reasons to leave Direct are too numerous. But this is a deal breaker and when we spoke to the Dish RV contact (I forgot the name of the unit) they clearly told us this cannot be done - but hinted we could buy our equipment else where and do it.
Thanks!

*Any of the Dish Network ViP series receivers (211K, 211Z or 211W-Wally) can record a channel and playback from a pre-recording - IF you have connected any off-the-shelf powered external hard drive and activated the Digital Video Record (DVR) firmware (a one time $40 fee) that is internal to the receiver.
*Any of the Dish Network ViP series receivers can record SAT and ALSO record an Over The Air (OTA) broadcast pulled from the rooftop OTA antenna - at the same time - IF there is an OTA tuner (OTA is built-in to the 211K and an external "dongle" for the others - see photo above)
*The newest ViP (211W or "Wally") can record 2 SAT channels AND play back pre-recorded shows AND record OTA - IF the SAT antenna is a 2-3 LNB head unit (means no portables like the Tailgater or G2) and (like above) is connected to the OTA antenna.
*If you go with a home style receiver (Hopper/Joey), these have internal DVR's and multi-tuner electronics. They cost more, but also give you more functions.

Functioning of all advanced Dish Network receivers actions (like anything other than power-on/off and restart) requires a remote control. There are 2 type remotes for Dish network receivers...Infrared (IR) and Radio Frequency (RF). The old/original IR is line-of-sight. The 211Z and Wally can use the newer RF remote* which can send a signal about 50' including thru walls. This also gives you the "find my remote" function.

If you buy a receiver with the older/original IR (line of sight) remote, you can buy an RF remote or an IR extender separately if desired...like
https://www.amazon.com/Dish-Network-.../dp/B018RJ2LXE
*UHF Remote is reportedly not compatible with 211K.
or
https://www.amazon.com/Next-Generati.../dp/B000C1Z0HA
Works with any IR remote.
Best luck

Dish Satellite Users Responses wanted
We have a Dish Travler with a 211k receiver.
We also have a 500Gb powered hard drive connected to the receiver (and paid a $40 one time charge to Dish to allow it)
We have a local roof antenna hooked to the receiver as well. No pay to Dish.
This allows us to:
1. Watch and record channels (duh)
2. Watch a recorded program while recording a second program. (What you want to do)
Now at this point we could not watch a live program and record another at the same time. BUT....
We pay Dish $5.00/month to get local channels wherever we are. So we get local channels from the Satellite broadcast as well as from the OTA rooftop antenna. Both of these channels show up on the guide on the receiver and they are recordable.
So now we are able to record one channel while watching another channel live-as long as one of the programs is on the OTA antenna. Which it usually is. Almost as good as having two tuners in the 211k without the expense.
Sorry for the long explanation.

We switched from DIrectv to Dish in January. We have both the in-motion and Pathway X2 antennas. We have the Wally receiver with an external drive. The DVR feature was free, per Dish this was started in December. We can record on one channel and watch another. The DVR is controlled via the remotes, which as RF.

I think there is some misinformation here. I may be repeating some of what others are saying, but I don't think there is one post that contains all of the following:
The Wally only contains one satellite tuner. It can only receive one satellite channel at a time. With the DVR feature, if you have an external hard drive connected, you can view one recorded program while recording one other. You cannot record one program and watch another one live at the same time.
If you connect an external over the air tuner, you can record an over the air program at the same time you record a satellite program. Or, you can watch an over the air program while recording a satellite program or vice versa.
While a Travel'r or RF Mogul antenna will work with a Wally, neither offers any additional reception benefit over a dome, since the single satellite tuner can only look at one satellite at a time.
If you have more than one Wally or think that you might someday upgrade to a multiple tuner receiver, like a Hopper, a multiple LNB antenna like a Travel'r would allow you to simultaneously watch channels located on different satellites. With proper installation, either an RF Mogul or a Travel'r will work with any of the Dish multiple tuner receivers.

Actually...The Wally with U430 Update and a 2 or 3 LNB antenna most surely CAN receive 2 SAT channels at the same time. See this thread:
http://www.irv2.com/forums/f53/wally...x2-377205.html
And there is reportedly a 2 tuner OTA dongle too.
Record 2 SAT channels AND playback at the same time...just gotta add the external hard drive.
This makes a Wally with tripod 1000.2/4, RF Mogul, or Trav'ler a major improvement over the previous Dish solo receivers.
Safe travels

If you happen to have a Hopper 3, the RF Mogul does have an advantage, in that you will then be able to record and watch as many as 16 (sixteen) channels at the same time.
See my previous post in this thread.
