My Good Sam Esp has pretty much paid for itself since the purchase in 2012. A new turbo got me ahead in year 1. A new Splendide 2100XC last week evened me up.
Renewal is this month and it's a done deal. I actually hope I never need the $20k for an engine overhaul like one member just went through. Always the self insurer, he didn't get the paper work in time for a ESP. Bet he wishes he had, but I haven't heard him say so exactly.
It's a personal decision. Do what you're comfortable with - but realize there a some big ticket items that can add up. Saving $4 grand a year for failures - if you can do that might work out - our it could leave you $16 grand short.
