Gas strut replacement on Dometic Awning

I am attempting to replace the gas struts on my 2009 Allegro Bus Dometic awning. Has anyone done this and if so what are the secrets? I have the awning extended and the pin in the bottom of one side partially removed but am concerned with moving forward without some input from someone who has accomplished this task. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm adding to this old post because I get a bunch of referrals come my way from it and the above video was for the smaller struts.
