Freightliner, Spartan, Power Glide (Tiffin own). Depends on the model and/or your choice. Check the Tiffin site http://www.tiffinmotorhomes.com/ for individual chassis and specs.

I know that a Freightliner chassis is used on Phaetons & also on Allegro Busses until 2007 when Spartan chassis was offered too.

Is the Freightliner chassis that's used on Allegro Busses the same that's used on Phaetons?

Both are built on the XCR chassis. However, there are differences in the way they are equipped. The Bus comes with IFS and side radiator to name a couple. For comparison, go to FCCC Motorhome Chassis: Built on Freightliner and bring up the singe or tag models you are interested in.

The Phaeton gets a solid front axle, Cummins 360 HP ISC engine with 1,050 ft-lbs of torque, and a rear radiator.

The Bus gets independant front suspension, Cummins 425 HP ISL engine with 1,200 ft-lbs of torque, and a side radiator.

Phaetons generally come with the Freightliner chassis if 40' or less or the Spartan chasis if a 42' tag axle coach. The current Phaeton can be gotten with the Powerglide single axle chassis as well as the Freightliner.

The Bus had it's choice of any of the three chassis but recently Spartan is not available. Don't know if that's until they get the new EPA-2010 emissions chassis in place or a permanent thing. The Powerglide is the popular and hot ticket right now on the Bus.

As of right now the entire chassis situation is in flux. The new emissions regs and model year changeovers make for somewhat of a confusing situation.

Ah, it's getting clearer now . . .

I drove a Phaeton recently and didn't care for the ride. I'd like to buy Tiffin, but wanted a better riding chassis like Spartan.

So for the Allegro Bus, all of the chassis (Freightliner, Spartan, & Powerglide) have IFS?

Ok, so IFS allows sharper turns, but how about the ride itself? Better? Night and day???

It depends on the conditions. On a smooth, flat highway there's no real difference. They all ride like a big motorhome. When you hit bumps and potholes the IFS has an advantage because it doesn't transfer shocks from one wheel throughout the whole axle. The most noticeable difference is when you enter a driveway aproach at an angle. A solid front axle tends to rock the coach from side to side while IFS allows each wheel to lift independantly from the other and you don't get that rocking.

Lastly, there's a big difference if you put one wheel off the edge of the road onto a gravelled shoulder. With IFS it doesn't pull to the right as bad as a solid axle would. If you ever have a front tire blowout you'll really have your hands full with a solid axle but with IFS it's much easier to control the coach and keep it on the road.

Oh yeah, you do get more front axle weight carrying capacity with IFS as well - although that only affects your load carrying capacity, not the ride.
