On my '14 Phaeton, I left the striker bolt alone and adjusted the latching mechanism. If you remove the cover, you will see the actuator rods that operate the latching mechanism. Over time, they become worn and/or out of adjustment. You will notice some barrel nuts with locking nuts on either end. These are the adjustment points. They only need very small adjustments to get everything working again - 1/4 turn at a time.
