Slide motor replacement

Can someone tell me how difficult it is to replace a living room slide motor on a 2003 Allegro Bay 37DB? It looks easy but I would like to hear from someone who has done it. Also, is it better to have the motor rebuilt or purchase a new one ($567)?
Thanks,

Herb

I did this in 2011 on my 2004 Bay. Local elec. shops would not attempt a rebuild; so, I call Red Bay Service. Got a good deal on an exact replacement w/o Tiffin's usual markup amount. Very Pleased with the quick shipping & knowledgeable tech.

I would caution you on buying via eBay as these come in all variety of configurations, shaft offset, orientation. I came this close >< to going this route; glad that I didn't as I now hear of other's stuck with incompatible motors. Red Bay is the better choice, IMHO.

DIY was easy. Cut your wires so that you leave the most length available for the replacement. Inspect the square-to-round transition to see if the shear bolts have elongated the otherwise perfectly "round" hole in the square tube. If worn, turn the square tube around and re-drill new shear pin holes in the shaft. Keep the hole dia. as tight to spec. [no wiggle room]. Replace shear bolts & nuts at 65-85 cents ea. Buy several for R&R now and for spares.

Thank you,

I will not buy this from Ebay. It will have to be direct. Tiffin price $567 for the motor not including shipping. I have checked with a local shop who can rebuilt it so I will probably try that. Haven't gotten a price yet. Still checking other sources for the motor but I cannot get info from motor unless I remove it which I cannot do right now as I have a trip planned this week. It does function, just worries me when I try to bring it in.

I had to replace mine in 2010 on 06 Allegro Bay. Just call Tiffin and give them your vin and they will supply you with new exact replacement. The installation was very easy.

Just a little heads up . The bolts that hold the square shaft to the motor shaft are not shear bolts. Just last week had one either break or loosen up and fall out. So went to the Tiffin forums and found a lot of info there. Turns out the bolts should be grade 8 1/4 20 shoulder bolts with the shoulder going completely thru the square tubing as the weak point is the threaded area. The one I had to replace was on the motor side of the gear box so had to shorten the bolt by cutting off about a 1/4 in. of the threads as it was to long and would hit the motor on rotating. The other bolts would not have to be shortened, but shimmed with washers for tight fit.

The nuts are special, too. Tiffin has nuts and bolts for Power Gear slides available. OP should order extras if and when he orders the motor.

Info

Thanks for all the input. I will make sure I have the correct bolts. When I remove the motor, inspect it and probably have it rebuilt, I will reinstall it and let everyone know how it works out.

Slide Motor

Well, I removed the slide motor and took it to a rebuild shop. They say there is no problem with the motor(just saved over $600). I reinstalled the motor with the brake disconnected. No help. Battery jumped directly to motor still gives proper operation. With auto jumper cables I jumped from the slide circuit breaker to the power input to the newly installed relay board. No change. Then basically jumpered over the wires from the compartment where the relay board is located directly to the slide motor and the slide operated much better. I guess I will have to replace the wires to the motor with larger wires. This has been quite a venture.
