Smell when pulling long hills

I experience a smell similar to hot brakes whwn pulling long steep grades. I'm not using any breaks at the time. It seems to be coming from the engine compartment. Has anyone experienced this. 2008 Alegro Open Road Front Engine Deisel (FRED) Thanks

HAve your checked to see if you have any abnormal temperatures from the area of the brakes? Maybe a front one is dragging a bit---?

This is a WAG---but I had a similar smell---and remembered the day before I had run over a plastic bag in the road, big one. On a hunch I stopped and looked---sure enough one muffler had this bag melted all over it and part of the exhaust pipe----???

I guess I would look for any errant wires cooking against something hot under the "hood".

Good luck----

I would check and sniff the transmission fluid. Just to be sure.

Have a look at the thermal wrap around the exhaust system. Does it looked "cooked"? (Mine is)

I have a 2008 32 BA FRED and have never had this. We just drove from Ohio to Gettyburg to Williamsburg the last two weeks Hit some 8 and 9 degree grades and the Fred handled it with no issues. ( The DW on the other hand wasn't as calm and she wasn't even driving! ) Put it into 3rd and let the engine brake take care of the rest. Never went faster than 30 mph and no smell. I was more concerned with the surge brakes braking the toad all the way down. I couple of times I would hit the pedal just to give the car brakes a breather for a few seconds. If you don't have anything caught under the rig, (plastic bag etc. ) I'd get it a drive somewhere where ypou could pull off to the side right after a good hill and "see (or smell)" if you can find the cause. I think Srydve and MuckSavage ideas are also good ones to follow through with.

Thanks for your replys. I took the unit in to an authorized Freightliner Dealer and had the engine Re-programed with the latest software from cummins and it seems to have solved the problem.
