We don't have a tag axle rig yet, but we have one on order.
I can tell you from personal experience during test drives, that the Spartan tag axle rig, drives nicer than our previous straight axle 36 foot pusher. Now weather that's due to the tag axle, the longer wheelbase, or the independant front suspension, I can't be positive. I feel it's a bit of combination of all three. I do know that the rear rides softer with the tag though as you just don't feel the second bump when going over an uneven expansion joint.
Certainly the extra length is going to affect maneuverability to an extent. Although our new motorhome will be 7 feet longer than our old 36 footer, there will be some circumstances where the tag axle will keep us away from shorter campsites. I recall times where we backed into a spot that I used to put the back wheels against the curb stop. Now, not only is the rig 7 feet longer, but with the tag, it will hit the curb stop first.
Most tag axles have an independant air dump switch which eliminates the load on the tag axle for close corner maneuvering. This effectivly shortens the rig wheelbase for tight turning.
Best suggestion is to drive a rig with and without the tag and get a feel for yourself which you feel more comfortable with.
