Welcome to iRV2;

Most FRED chassis ( FRont Engine Diesel ) were equipped with a Cummins ISB, very similar to that used in Dodge pick-ups. Considered to be the fuel mileage king, of motor home engines, and very reliable.
Only complaint I've heard, is , like gas class A's there is considerable engine noise in the drivers area, compared to the pusher chassis.

My in-laws have an '07 and they love it. Their only complaint is the engine noise. They did take it back to Red Bay few years ago for a couple issues, but I don't remember what they were.

We have a FRED. It's a 2012 thor serrano. Spouse bought online while I was out of the country fishing. (a show of independence?) Read LOTS of negative reviews about the noise, heat, thor in general. Happy to say we've had none of it. Great mileage, comfortable, lots of bang for the buck. No regrets.

Never owned one but I can think of a few advantages. Such as, at the end of the day our rear end engine is directly under the bed, and that engine retains heat! That bed room can be a sauna if you head straight to bed after a long day on the road. On the other hand pumping hot engine coolant from a rear engine all the way to the dash to keep you warm as you drive has a distinct disadvantage as well. Along with that goes the advantage/disadvantage of where the weight of the engine helps with things like traction; etc.

FRED RV chassis come in two favors, Cummins and Maxxforce. Make sure you know the difference.

I have a 2009 Allegro Bay 38tgb Fred. Love it! It is a freightliner chassis with no hump in the front. One benefit is the low center of gravity with the weight of the engine allows little or no turbulence when being passed by the big rigs. Very stable. Good mileage even when towing. Noise is not an issue although obviously not silent.

We had a FRED - a 1995 Safari Trek with the Chevrolet V8 diesel. It was smooth to drive and not all that noisy. Have always thought the more modern and RV specific built Cummins/Freightliner FRED would be a very good alternative to the typical gas Motorhome setup. The ISB is a generally considered a very reliable engine.

You didn't say what coach builder or chassis, but if it isn't, don't buy it. You don't want a propane generator.

We have a 2008 Tiffin Allegro Bay FRED chassis. It has been great. They have their quirks. The big three from Tiffin (cap rails,slide floor,wet bay). The parking brake (J72 autopark brake) can be an issue.
Also at that age check the DOT date on the tires. Enjoy your RV.

Please tell me what to look for on the side floor and wet bay. I understand the roof cap. Thanks.

WELCOME to iRV2.com!
I had a propane generator in a previous coach. While I agree a diesel or gas generator is preferred, the propane generator got the job done.
