Often the air cleaner in a diesel is a self contained large metal can with the filter element inside. The whole thing is swapped out, new for old. It does involve detaching the inlet and outlet hoses, possible a small hose for the air restriction gauge. Mine was held in place by two large straps and dropped out the bottom quite easily.

The recommended time for replacement is 5 years. The reason is that the air cleaner/ filter inside the can is paper. If the filter starts to disintgrate the paper can enter the turbo and cause failure. That's very expensive not to mention that it can leave you on the side of the road. If I were you I would go ahead and replace it now. Cheap in comparison to what can happen.
