1986 Engine mounted AC
Hello:
I have a 1986 Bounder w/ a 454. The AC needs to be charged. From what I understand the refrigerant used was R12, please correct me if that is incorrect. I am looking for a source for the refrigerant and how it is installed. I found the cylinder shaped part w/ the glass observation port but I can't find the charging port. I am looking for what looks sort of like the end of a wheel valve stem with a cap on it. Again please correct me if that isn't what I'm supposed to be looking for. Thanx, Jimmy

Do yourself a favor and look up HC-12a.
This is a propane based replacement for R-12. It works very well and has no compatibility issues and zero Ozone depletion or Warming Potential. And it is inexpensive.

I was talking to my home ac tech and he said the R12a is not good to use as it increases the pressure and can damage the seals. Is this correct? I just don't know.

I looked on Amazon and you are correct about R12a being cheaper and compatible as well (according to the product information supplied). So that part is solved but I need to find where you put it in.

Go buy some Red Tek 12A and a R12 install hose. Been using it for years in all sorts of applications. Works very well and not expensive

OK Thanx guys. I found the place where you put in the refrigerant. It is on top of the compressor. There are 2 ports. One is marked "Suction". Is that where the 12a goes? Is Red Tek12a better than others? I'm getting closer to another Amazon delivery!

Thanx for the input. I ordered one the other day. I got the one with the gauge, no particular reason other than gauges are cool.

Here is my 2 cents. First have found the leak. Your refrigerant system is a closed loop system so if you need to add some you must ask where did it go. Second, yes a novice can add refrigerant safely, but please read all the instructions carefully. Do no over charge the system. If you have access to a knowledgeable person have them help. Many here will probably tell you that they have done it with no troubles. I've seen what happens when someone does something wrong. Just letting you know as an AC technician

Thank you BDWEAK: good advice. I have a friend that keeps me out of trouble. He is HVAC Bob and I can trust his advice.
