Depleted both extinguishers, then the flame started up again. I tried to flag down passiing truck and 20 must have gone by while I waved my empty fire extinguishers at them. Then one stopped and using his large extinguisher barely got it out before it too was empty.

I’m sorry for your trouble, that’s a nightmare scenario.

I think I need to invest in another fire extinguisher or two, and push up the priority of a TPMS, I’ve had some brake issues on my P30, mostly I think because of the irregular use.

Most of us carry at least some water in the fresh water tank, I wonder if there would be a way to utilize it in a situation like this. Most fire extinguishers work by removing oxygen, water would help with what’s really needed in this situation, cooling it off, as it stays hot for a long time, as you found. Maybe a bucket brigade or hose from a kitchen or bathroom faucet?

Dave you have a valid point and it is something I already considered(not while luna-ticking around in the break down lane on I40 though). The tire was on fire above the axle, so getting water on it from a bucket would be tough...no... impossible. Something stupid like a kids SuperSoaker squirt gun would have been a huge help...some of them can hold a lot of water, and they are pump....no batteries required.

I bought two small extinguishers and one larger one like this from wallyworld to replace my spent ones:

The big one will stay in the basement near the exit door. One small up front, one small in rear bedroom. I'm still not sure this is enough, so a SuperSoaker might be a cheap alternative back-up and you could even keep it...LOADED all the time.
