Atwood water heater element and surprise

Hi Folks

Rookie mistake, I turned on the water heater without water (electric) oops.

I pulled it today to replace the element and there is a wire that is burned on a disk type sensor. I assume it's a temp sensor of some sort. New wire connection is easy but what is this disc and where to I get a new one?

I think its a sensor for over temp. I replaced mine from a camp store long tome back. Sense you have everything out, replace it all. You ll be happy not to have to pull out your heater again.

Those appear to be the ECO and Temp thermostats. Depending on what unit you have you can search the model in Google and find the manual for your unit.

This is a good example of needing MODEL number......

With the ECO (Energy Cut Off/Hi Temp t-stat) and the T-stat (normal temp t-stat) being installed on backside with the element then the water heater is 2003/previous year model
ECO---OPENS at 180*F
T-stat,,,,,opens at 140*F



Element is a screw in version and the 6 gal/10 gal use the same set of t-stats

I was a little alarmed at the extend of the char on the connector. I’m glad that is inside the metal protective cover.

I’ll remember “MODEL NUMBERS” next time, good point.

Full 120V AC Voltage on those terminals....loose spade connection/high resistance/HEAT

Got the new thermostats all installed and new element installed. Hopefully I don’t do that rooky mistake again. The element I ordered was about 2 inches longer than the one that was in it so I used a 110 volt 1500 watt from Home Depot that was the same length. Works great. Thanks for the help

Since 2004 Atwood changed from a 1500W to a 1400W 120V AC element to lower the amps
1500W---12.5A
1400W---11.6A


The Home Depot element will work just fine......check the AC Circuit Breaker


OEM ;element' is 9 1/4"

Overall length is 10 1/2"




Its good to have HOT water
