Bounder wont start without a jump?

we've got a 1994 fleetwood bounder and the engine wont start without being jumped. the terminals have been cleaned and one of the battery terminals has been replaced, and so have two out of three batteries...any thoughts? we drove it all the way from oregon to colorado no issue (our maiden voyage) after we got it. we noticed the issue after shed been sitting for a month not hooked up to shore power (though the power to the gas was still on-had no idea about the whole disconnecting the battery thing!). any thoughts are greatly appreciated

You mention cleaning terminals, did you also clean ground connections? When you say it won't start, does it crank at all, just slowly, or something else? Do you have a battery boost switch on the dash to do the 'jumping' or have to hook up another battery? What voltage reading do you get when ignition is on? Also, what chassis is the Bounder built on? It might help others make suggestions.

You'll probably get a lot more answers in the Fleetwood forum.

You can do a search. The knowledge there is deep and broad.

one of the battery terminals has been replaced

Huh? What exactly does that mean? Pretty tough to replace a terminal. Now, you can replace a CABLE.

and so have two out of three batteries....any thoughts?

Not exactly sure what your stating here. Now, being that it's a '94, and a gas unit, I'm going to assume, that you're sporting TWO house batteries and ONE engine battery, correct? If so, are ALL the TERMINALS and cable ends thoroughly clean and tight? And especially includes the NEGATIVE ends, on the frame and or engine! So many folks pay attention to the positive ends but, neglect the negatives 'cause they can't get to the other end of them. I've seen some pretty bad and rusted/corroded negative cable ends on the frames.
Now, once you've made darn sure all the cables are in good shape, clean and tight. Now you can begin checking voltages. I'd start by checking battery voltage, right at ALL the batteries, without the engine running and no shore power. Note all the readings.

Then, start the engine, then do all the checks again, note the readings and compare to the first set.

Then, stop the engine, and plug into shore power. Now, check them again. Note the readings. Compare to the other readings.

Depending how your '94 Bounder was set up or, if any modifications have taken place, your Converter should provide a charge to your house batteries while plugged into shore power. Not sure if your model/year would have provided an additional charge to the chassis battery while on shore power. Regardless of what some think, all motor homes are NOT built the same. Let us know what you find out.

I don't see any indication that the issue here would be unique to a Fleetwood product.

Non start

Be sure that your inverter/converter is turned off when not in use. If left on it can deplete batteries by supplying various hidden loads.

So far, he's not indicated that his coach is a diesel. Just about any gas coach, at least back then, would not have an "Inverter/Charger". It SHOULD have a CONVERTER that, as I stated earlier, should charge the house batteries but, until further clarification, we don't know if it also charges the chassis batteries. He might have a small 300W Inverter for running the TV and DVD or VCR but, those, when not in use, draw very minimal. He indicates that, if the coach is running, then shut down and an attempt to re-start is tried, there is an instant no-start condition, unless the coach is jumped from an outside source.

Take the battery out and take them to auto zone to get tested. They may be bad?

To prove it's a bad ground connection, take a jumper cable and clamp one side on the (-) terminal and clamp the other end on the engine. If it starts with no extra battery, that shows a ground connection is causing resistance.

This whole thread is interesting. The original post is so poorly worded I am amassed at the way all the answers etc. have gone. Poor guy need a friendly mechanic to help him. Just reading all the post I am reminded of a gossip session of a bunch of old cogggers breakfast club that started out with someone farting and before the meeting was over it was reprted tha he had suffered a heart attack.
