Cold Weather Temps

DW and I are headed out next week to close to Bend, OR. Temps at night are currently in the high 20's....what temp do I need to set the furnace at in our 2002 Southwind so things don't freeze at night?

Thanks for any advice!

Wow, that is COOL for this time of year. I'd guess you'd be safe at 68 degrees on the stat.

My son lives in Bend; I don't think it's that cold there yet. That said, get a thermometer and keep an eye on temps in the water bay.

We're actually going to be between Sunriver and LaPine, but in years past it's been pretty darned chilly at night sometimes. Thanks for the responses, another learning experience coming up!

We spent a November night in the Sierras at a 20 degree low temperature and the furnace picked this particular night to fail. I discovered in the morning, the failure was a sticky sail switch, which the extreme cold aggravated. We had no issues that night with the water at all, in our '93 Bounder. Fortunately it takes more than a night to cool down an enclosed large tank of water. Things will warm up during the day and start the whole process again. At 20 degree temps the furnace cycles plenty enough set at 60, in our thinning insulated, single pane window rv.

If you aren't freezing in the bedroom, the plumbing should be ok into the mid-high 20's. Any amount of furnace operation at all should be putting a little heat in the bay area, so it is probably stating above freezing anyway.

Your waste water dump valves are exposed, though. If the temps are going to stay below freezing for several hours, consider putting in some RV antifreeze in the gray & black tanks for the valves don't freeze up. They probably won't until somewhat less than 26-28, but better safe than sorry. Freezing can damage the valve seal, even though it thaws out when the day warms up again.
