Disable entry step?

Is there a way to disable or shut off the entry step from inside the coach, for example if you don't want it to extend because you are parked close to a tall curb? The only way I have found to prevent mine from extending is to use the chassis battery shutoff in the engine compartment. The switch near the door has two positions: one extends and retracts the step with every door open and close. The other leaves it extended until coach is put into gear. Seems like there would be a lot of bent steps if no way to prevent extension. Thanks.

I put a magnet on the side of the steps next to the door. It makes it think the door is shut.

Yup, that's how they are. The control circuit for the step motor senses current draw, it kills the motor if the steps hit anything, whacking a curb won't hurt em.

On our Georgetown, there's a small control panel as you enter the rig, down at floor level on the kitchen cabinet. One of the switches on there will freeze the steps at the position they're at when you operate it.

The only time it's over-ridden is if the steps are out and you turn the ignition switch on. The steps can be kept in if required, but I've never had to do it.

Find the main power undeneath by the steps and run a wire to a switch inside to disable.

I installed a Ford window control switch on my step about 5 years ago.It only goes in or out when I want it to. Not for everyone but it works for us.

My Bounder has a switch near the door that cuts power to the steps, so I can leave them out or in as I choose.

Some older coaches the switch for the steps was called a "POWER" Switch and worked more or less exactly as you wish. (If off the steps remained "put" wherever they were, save they would retract when engine started and then door closed).

Today it is called an "Override" switch and it only works with the steps in the OUT position.

I located teh wires to the door switch.. As I recall mine works like this "Door closed switch closed" Wired a toggle in across them.. Now I flip the toggle and the steps think the door is closed.

Older controllers, as I recall door closed, switch open.. If you have that kind you put the toggle in the other way up and in series with one of the wires.

Either way.. Simple job.

Do be careful! I find it really easy to not look before I step.

If I were to put a disable switch in the circuit, I would make it a double pole with a bright LED lamp on the door as a warning.

I place the flat magnet on the side of the stairs. There is a magnet on the screen door, it has to be placed so the magnet on the side of the stair way fools the magnet on the door. It stays there when ever I want the steps to stay in. I got the magnet that is about the size of a Domino at a craft store.
