Discovery Under Powered?

Is the 2009 Discovery 40k (41') under powered with the Cummins 350hp
650 torque?
Has anyone had any problems or is this the right engine for this coach?
Like the coach but want to make sure no engine issues before I buy.
Thanks
Sid

What are you planning to tow behind it?

Welcome!

Much depends on your usage. Lightweight or heavy toad? Or a trailer, and how heavy? Where commonly traveled - lots of mountains often, or just occasionally?

My DP has a 350 CAT, and my toad is heavy, and I travel through mountain passes. I don't think you will find a motorhome that will win on race day, but you will finish the race. While I am not the fastest up the grade, I am not the slowest either. I would not hesitate to buy another 350 HP DP, Cummins or CAT, this one does ok, but I am not expecting to win any races either.

The standard figure of merit for motorhome power is 100 lbs/hp. If the Discovery meets that it should be adequate. Divide estimate coach+ toad weight by the horsepower (350) and see what you get. 100/hp isn't gonna be fast, but it gets the job done.

As a comparison, your car probably has only 20 lb/hp, or even less.

My coach + toads scales at 37,700 lbs and my 370 HP Cummins ISL moves it fine on the flats, OK on 3% grades, but slows down noticeably on steeper hills. Wish I had another 30-50 hp then, but it still manages ok. So what if car pass me? I still usually pass trucks on the same grade.

With that little amount of torque, I assume you have the 5.9 ISB. That's small for a 41' DP. My last coach was a 41' Amer Coach...it had an 8.9 ISL, 400 HP and 1,200 ft/lbs of torque. But if the 5.9 serves your needs, it'll work.

Gees people, we used to drag 80,000 lbs up Donner Pass with 250 HP. You are not going to a race.

We just returned from a trip to Yellowstone with our 350HP. It did slow down but nothing major. The only time we struggled was when someone pulled out in front of us and we had to start the hill practically from a stop.

I have the 6.7 in a 2010 40g. It's so under powered I'm embarrassed on any hill. In flat country it does ok. But I luv the floor plan. It's the nicest coach I've been in.
So I put up with the snails crawl up the hills.

Discovery Under Powered?

I have a 6.7 360HP in 40 ft coach and pull a 5k toad for a total weight of about 40k lbs. Sure it slows up a steep grade but overall the performance is acceptable.
