DOMETIC wind speed sensor failure

While in Florida these past months, I witnessed my speed sensor failing to retract my canopy in a sudden high wind. Had I not been in the coach, the canopy may have been blown over the top onto the roof. Lowering the speed sensor to its lowest setting of 12 MPH and then testing with a hair dryer aimed directly at the sensor got no response. I called Dometic and they sent a replacement to my home. Only because the warranty was going to expire. Otherwise they wanted me to find a Dometic dealer.

Today I'm home and replaced the sensor which was delivered here.

The problem was not Dometic's responsibility it turns out.

Insects plugged the holes with webs. This could not be seen until it was removed.

I'm including a picture of the webs. The hole on the right is clear. The oval encloses the second hole covered with webs. I will be using insect killer/repellent on the sensor to stop this from happening.

Left canopy open after installing new sensor. I had it set at 12 MPH. Walked inside not realizing the winds were picking up speed. When I went back to the coach the canopy had retracted.

There is no warning that your sensor isn't going to work. We had a false sense of security in the system.

Here's a better picture. Red arrow and blue point to both areas with webs.

My coach is 2014 Bounder 33C. Wind speed sensor is on canopy arm next to entry door. Do not remove the bolt located on the bottom. Loosen and remove nut holding sensor from the top. Plug is tricky to remove.

I'm thinking my message here should be clarified. I am suggesting that your canopies should be tested by you. Extend your canopy, set up a step ladder to reach the sensor, set the sensor speed to the lower setting of 12 mph, use a hair blower with heat off to blow air past the sensor with the blower next to the sensor. Just blow past the sensor not into it directly. If it retracts, it is working. Now you know for sure it works. This test was suggested by Dometic as a valid method.

Thanks for the pat on the back.

There's an additional function. When the temperature drops to approximately 32 degrees the canopy should be retracting automatically. It assumes snow or ice will accumulate. That function worked on my canopy two nights in FLORIDA!

My awning has the opposite problem. It retracts randomly when there is NO wind. Changed to the highest wind setting and I think it happens less often but that might just be wishful thinking. Any ides?
