Electrical Short/Smoke 2012 Discovery 36J

Thought I'd pass this along in hopes of saving others from a smoke filled cabin. As we were departing a campground near Mesa Verde, we were all set to go, when suddenly smoke came pouring out of the center/lower dash behind the hinged door covering the underside of the dash. I immediately turned off the coach, eliminating the current flow to what I assumed was an electrical short/fire.

When the smoke cleared, I opened the hinged door, and there was evidence that one of the multiple fused connectors had shorted out against the metal bracket supporting part of the dash. Apparently the protective cap came loose, allowing the fused connector to touch the metal bracket. No wonder the dash A/C quit working!

You can see the result of the high current/heat that melted the fuse holder. I bought a replacement in-line holder with a 30A fuse, installed it, and the A/C works fine.

BOTTOM LINE: If you have a Discovery (perhaps other models/makes as well) that has capped fuse holders, check to ensure they are closed. A little electrical tape will keep you from the smokey adventure we had.
