Extended warranty. Who bought one

So we made the jump to a used 2012 American Revolution 42w. We love the coach and I am pretty handy so I questioned weather or not to spend the several thousand dollars on an after market extended warranty. My dearly beloved wanted the peace of mind so we bought one. I am second guessing my decision and it seem that the companies that sell them know what tends to break and what doesn't. I had some issues with my aquahot system and with some electronics and neither were covered. It did not amount to that much money (less than 600.00) but hey that's a tank of diesel. The warranty is good to 60,000 so we will have to see if it pays off or not. It is one of those things that if you never have to use it it is money wasted but if you have a major issue it is money well spent.

You can always look at it as a win win situation. If you never have to use it then you didn't have any major problems; good for you!
If you do have to use it then it was a good investment; good for you!

This is a question that will never have the right answer until it's over!!
We recently purchased the next 4 yrs worth of coverage out of fear, and I'm kind of handy also............. Provides some peace of mind.

We did. Paid for 2 TV's, a slide motor, awning arm & tension bar, washer circuit board, washer pump, back up monitor, entry step motor, a couple of bad light fixtures, half a dozen+ awning locks, several bay struts & a host of other nit-picky stuff I no longer remember. I believe we broke even with what we paid for it vs what it cost in labor & parts to fix stuff over the 1st several years. Yeah, we paid for it up front & some may have said keep the money, put it aside to earn interest & then it'll be there when we need it. But even then, interest rates were squat, it was peace of mind & nice when something went wrong to just drop the coach off at the dealer & then pick it up later without paying anything else.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

As mentioned, there is no one "right" answer to this question. Extended warranties are insurance policies... NOT really warranties. We bought a six year EW when we purchased our new 40DP in 2007. We were newbies and wanted to buy some peace of mind... and we did.

Concerns arise when these things are viewed as "investments" upon which you either win or lose. IMHO these should be considered using the same logic used when purchasing other types of insurance such as health, auto, home, etc. It's strange that we never see posts from people who feel that they should never have purchased auto insurance because they haven't had an accident... but we see plenty from those who feel they didn't get their money's worth on their EW because they didn't see a "return".

IMHO, just decide how much you value a degree of peace of mind and if you still think an EW might be worth it to you... use our search feature to find the good the bad and the ugly when it comes to selecting an EW company.

Best of luck

Rick

After a year I'm thinking my $3k extended warranty limited to just some of the coach items is going to be a big waste of money. I can fix almost anything, I don't want to take the RV in because we are full timers, and asked for tow truck to help pull RV out of the mud and were refused.

I am not a fan of extended warranties, however I do think they can have a place with the purchase of a used coach as a mitigation against unknown or latent major cost issues. Get one with a high deductible and one year term. After the year, and having history and experience, reevaluate the need to continue.

1st time posting, been a member for a while.

Hi Everyone, I have been watching and reading a lot of the posts and learning a lot. I have found out that no mater how much experience you have you can always learn from others and this site has been a lot of help. The question I have about warranties is what is the average turn around time on a repair. Does it take a day, week, month. My reasoning is that if I am traveling and my refrigerator goes out, am I going to wait for the warranty process to take place or just buy one and be on our way...
What is your input.

My refrigerator went out in my 2009 Holiday Rambler on the way to Florida last year. I made a call to the warranty company we had at the time and hthe park we were staying at had a RVrepair guy they recommended and I was fixed in about 4 days. All I had to pay was my deductible. It paid off having an extended warranty on that coach and was one of my main reasons for getting on on my 2012 Revolution. If you have an extended warranty before you make a repair, Call them.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We were full time and used our six year EasyCare extended warranty several times and in several states. We never had a refrigerator go out but found that dealers/shops/EW company were all willing to acknowledge that we NEEDED to stay in the coach and worked together well to get things done in a timely, efficient manner. The EW company never injected unreasonable delays. If they required inspection of the problem, it might take a day to get someone there but parts can cause that type of delay as well so I don't think it's a big deal.

This certainly isn't always the case but it's what we experienced.

Best of luck

Rick

Happy about mine

We bought one whe we bought our Bounder. We broke even 3 years in to a 5 year run.

Slide brake, munched wiring in a slide, brake seal & wheel bearing failure and rear view monitor replaced.

My advice is to shop around and not just buy it from the stealership like we did.

When we bought our Thor ACE, the original owners had an extended plan. One of our mandates when we jumped in to an RV (and we knew we weren't buying new) was we were to have an existing mfg. warranty and/or an extended warranty. We paid the $50 to have the extended warranty changed over to us and glad we did. Two days ago, I had a macerator failure. Although I did the initial dis assembly, trouble shooting and found the problem (I like to consider myself mechanically inclined) , I decided to turn in a claim which has already paid for the $50 transfer fee. The pump is $230.00 and I have yet to see the entire bill for labor/mobile fees as they are scheduled to come back tomorrow to complete the repair. At a $100 deductable, it has proven already to be somewhat of a no brainer and certainly has given us piece of mind as others have said.
