Fiberglass engine cover in Pace Arrow is cracked
The fiberglass engine cover that accesses the motor has cracked from people standing on it. If you push, you can see daylight through the floor. Has anyone experienced this? And more importantly, does it detach so I can have the cover repaired? Thank you
Andy

Yes there should be 4 clips that hold it to the floor. If you can do it your self if not take it to a body shop that deals alot with Fiberglass (Corvets). Mine is weak also but I try not to step on it. I had a new shelve made to almost cover the whole Doghouse so I don't worry that I end up on top of the 454.LOL
You can see the clips in the frontsides
Hope this helps.
Tim

Thanks. I've heard there are a bunch of screws holding it on. I don't have a lot of experience with fiberglass but I figured if I took it out myself and drove it to the shop I would save a lot of money. Can you stand on the shelf you made?

No why would I?
I'm 6'1 and have to bend over to get into my seat as is.
The whole dog house should be held down buy the 4 corner clips. Now maybe someone screwed it down for security or something.
Now that shelf is just screwed into the fiberglass the original one was screwed down also it took a good while to get it off. I could have the bottm shelf flat but then every thing would roll off. So we installed it at level.

Fiberglass is pretty easy to work with if your interested in fixing it your self you can get materials at most auto parts stores. There should be a strap on both sides up under the dash and either a couple of screws or clips on the back, the whole thing then slides back they aren't that heavy but are quite bulky and awkward to move. You'll want to wear gloves fiberglass is rough on the back side and may be sharp enough to cut.

I believe your Pace has the two piece cover. It is probably the base that is cracked because most people don't step on the smaller top piece. The base is screwed to the floor with half a dozen screws. To access the screws you lift the carpet and remove all the screws in the lip of the cover. The lower base also has sealant that will have to be cut by sliding a knife in between the floor and the lip. The top forward lip will have to be loosened the same way.

Hope you find a solution.

From the pic, you can see the cracks on the right side and at the front of it. The engine cover is attached to the about an inch of sub flooring. The new plan is to build a wood frame that is insulated with a hinged cover for access to the engine. I am taking out the fiberglass cover completely.

I am with Marc. Fiberglass is super strong, if done right. It would be a easy fix and would hold weight if layered correctly. Thanks a lot for the pictures. they will probably help someone in the future. Don't forget the sealant under the lip of the cover. Just slide a sharp knife under the lip to free it. Also, make sure you reseal the edge when going back. There is a lot of mist in this area when driving in the rain.

I own a 2004 Gulfstream SunVoyager. the motor cover was flexing quite a bit when I stepped on it getting into the drivers seat, so I bought a piece of 3/4 inch plywood and cut to fit the top of the engine cover, screwed it down to the cover and covered with a throw rug. It is now strong and does not flex at all.
Worked for me.

I am assuming you worked on a flat surface and damage area did not reach forms or shapes .
did you use the plywood on top or under ? on engine side ?
using plywood could make for hard to blend finish if you place on top .
90% of the time you just add fiberglass on the underside (engine side ) and have nothing to do on the top side ,not affecting the look or finish .
cutting fiberglass is done with scissors and faster then cutting wood
I feel most fear this kind of repair and it is just as easy to do as painting a wall
