OK, I winterized my motor-home to make sure I had not problem this spring, and now I am wondering first how much water should I hold in the tank to insure I have enough and not too much to create extra weight ? 2nd I need to understand how the hot water heated get filled before I test it, I have to assume the draws from the fresh water tank, but to insure it has water is the anything I must do to protect it from overheating due to lack of water or not enough wanter, I do not want to create a problem for myself just because I don't know that process. also as long as I am speaking about de-winterized, is there anything else I should do?

I add about a pint (some add as much as a quart) of Clorox as I fill the fresh water tank. Then I open the taps and let them run until I smell the Clorox. I let it "stew" for about 24 hours and then empty and refill it again. You may retain a little of the odor but it will go away quickly and your tank will be safe. My water goes into the hot water heater first so no problem there. Also, when I travel I carry as little water (most times none) as possible, just carrying two gallons of water in two milk bottles in case we need to use the bathroom until we reach the next campground.

Close to your water controls, might be under you bed, should be a bypass valve's, 3, to the hot water tank. Need to open the one going to and one leaving from the tank and close the center, bypass, valve.

Also my manual calls for 1/4 cup of bleach for every one gallon of water to your fresh water tank.

I have not been able to locate a bypass valve, and if there is one, It was never closed so it should still be open, because the water heater worked before I drained it the fresh water tank, so I will assume that it will fill with water when it needed it, I did not drain it when I winterized, it I did change the anode rod and water flushed then, so I know it was empty afterward.

Fill your fresh water tank. Start the water pump. Turn on a hot water faucet in the coach. When water starts to run out of the faucet then you know the hot water tank is full.

But first I would pull the drain plug out of the hot water tank while the pump is running. If water starts to pour out then turn off the pump, reinstall the plug turn the pump back on then do what I stated above.

Be sure you check for leaks. Sounds like you did not install RV anti-freeze in your water lines. Just draining the water system does not always completely drain your water lines.

Another recommendation is: After flushing RV Anti-freeze, After sterilizing with Bleach, Then flush again, Then fill after adding a quart of white vinegar. Then drain, flush and refill. Odors gone, set to go! If trying to minimize weight do not fill but carry a 3 to 5 gallon jug of water from home until you arrive at destination. If you have a pet it will probably prefer water from home.
