Been thinkin on changing my fuel filters, I've had it done 2 times already
first time by A Fleetwood Service and they had a very hard time getting the Cummins ISB started again. then when it did it ran rough, very rough
then at my 12,000 mile M2 Service I had it done again, this time no problems starting or running. I talked to them about how they did it
and was told they filled the fuel filter with fuel then installed it.
I asked Cummins that question and they said don't do it that way cause
fuel is not filtered, and I don't know if theu ever changed the water seperator filter inside the see thru bowl.

My questions is
1, does fuel from the tank go thur water seperator first of fuel filter first
before going to the engine?

2. How do "I" change the filters and in what order?
(don't want a situation where I have to tow it in to get system recharged or bleed)

3. suggestions to look out for?

I want to do this before my up coming 5,000 trip

Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreicatied

Ron

Change them at the same time. Make sure you have the right filters ready take one off fill it up with clean diesel and put it on and repeat with the other one no priming needed. Crank it and check for leaks. No need to pre fill oil filter. Are you changing filters at least yearly no matter how many miles?

I just changed the fuel filters on my ISL. Here's what I did:

-Prefilled the new primary filter...that's the one with the water separator...and changed it.

-You are not supposed to prefill the secondary since some crud could get in the engine, so I did not prefill it. Replaced this filter.

-Primed by turning key on for one minute and off for one minute, as instructed by Cummins tech, four times. Would not start...long story short, I removed the new secondary filter, filled it with diesel and reinstalled it.

- Primed as above, and it started.

Ron I will tell you how I do it.You will get many opinions against it.
The water seperator is usually first.I always run the engine to get it warm, then work fast.I always fill the filter.I have done many service calls for people that didn't.with the filter back on.Do only one filter at a time.Start the engine ,it is still warm and oiled up.Hold the throttle at full fuel for about 15 seconds then back off to about 1500 RPM.After about 30 seconds the engine will miss a little, when it does go back to full fuel.It should smooth out in a few seconds. The Cummins should be ready to go.
A cat can still have some air trapped, sometimes for several miles.
Maybe this will help.

I change my Fuel Filters @ 5000 mile intervals. I find a lot of particulate matter in the filters and not from my fuel tank either. Fuel today is dirty out of the pump.
I use and have always used Fleetgard Filters and right on the side of the Filter are the directions that indicate to fill the filter with clean fuel prior to installation. My old Cummins always burps a little on fresh Filter start up then smooths right out.

We prime them also and change both at the same time. I plug the big hole in the middle with my thumb while DW slowly pours fuel in the small outer ones. This filters the fuel in the unlikely event there is any crud in it. You should be able to eyeball the fuel in your gas (diesel) can anyway. We bought a one gallon just for priming and take it along just in case. We found out the hard way that not priming turns into a major PIA. Did the turn the key on, wait and do it again till we got sick of it and removed the filter and primed it.

Any diesel repair shop will tell you they prime filters. They don't have time to screw around with the key on off dance.

On a diesel, filters are very necessary to keep from expensive injector and lift pump repairs.

All done and thanks for the help.
as it all turned out I decieded to go to Frieghliner and have it done
with the simpulation THey would instructed me along the way.
Reason
I started the morning myself with filling the water seperator with fuel and using the filter my book said, I got my wrenches, oil for o ring filter full of diesel a little screwdrive to undo the wire connector harness, I notice that it is a screen in connector not a slip on like the new filter, PROBLEM seems cummins ship the engine with one kind of filter and Frieghtliner changed to another. I'm pissed as I now have a new filter full on fuel and its no good to me at all $40 down the drain.
I gave up and went to freightliner with what I wanted ( instruction)
a chassis lube (18 points) and differentail checked.
they showed step by step how to do it and wasn't very neat about filling the filters full, I thought no air bubbles and entirely full
Nope 7/8 full and slap it on fuel filter and he said start it up.
it cranked about 3 times normal lenght maybe 4 to 5 seconds and it started and ran smooth. Next water seperator same thing clean clean bowl on bottom, oil o ring put 2 parts together fill it 7/8 or so full
and put it back on and plug in wire harness. cranks 4 to 5 seconds and ran smooth, drove home all is smooth and cost $160 for everything including all fitlers
I was always afraid to do this as the frist time I had it done at a Freightliner Oasis dealer they cranked and cranked many times and finally after 30 min of so it started and ran so rough and they tell me some BS about new engines now having elec lift pumps and that all was it was BS
acutally this is so simple I'd say less problems than changing the oil
for all those that gave me thier advice I thank you. I made domwthing out of nothing as I finally found out.

I heard changing filter should be done yearly and another says every oil change. Book says something entirely different, its every oil change for me.

Change with every oil change if by mileage or yearly which is the same as when you change your oil.
