I just sold my previous 38' diesel coach and am looking to upgrade.
I know everyone says if you can purchase a tag axle, you shouldn't be concerned with mileage. Well, I must fall into a different breed. I was getting a solid 10.8 miles per gallon on my previus with a 300 Hp Cummins and 6 speed allison tranny. With the new Discovery 380hp tag axles does anyone have experience they'd share on what their mileage is and experience with this coach? It drove like a dream but.......

We love the layout but get concerned everytime I talk to someone in a reosrt with a tag axle saying he gets 5 miles per the gallon.

Thank you,
Dean

I would guess not near 10.8, really depending on your driving habits. On the forem everyone mileage is all over the numbers and some are just unreal.

Best I've gotten so far is 8.3 and lowest 7.6. 2011 Rev 42W 8.9L with tag. Better than our 2009 Prov 40X with the 8.3L. And the ride with tag, no comparison!!! Thats crusing at 63 mph, typically, pulling Honda CRV.

You should expect something in the 7-8mpg range unless you do a lot of climbing, or drive faster than 65. Here in Utah, pulling a Suburban, and going up hill a lot, I get 6.8.

It's not the tag axel that is the problem it is the additional weight they added to the coach that required the tag.

Horse power is the same now as it was a century ago ...horses need to be feed and watered.

Looks like we have the same coach. We traded in our 07 Discovery on it. I am interested in hearing how you like it? With reference to fuel milage, I haven't figured that out yet due to not really driving it yet, but just driving it back from the dealer I have to say the ride will be worth the sacrifice!! I would never have thought it would be so much different than our Freightliner.....and I thought it was great.

500hp at 62 mph yields 7.5 to 8mpg. So horsepower is not necessarily the determining factor. As someone said, it's more the conditions and driving style. When we go over 65mph, mpg drops. I've heard that the less hp and torque you have, pushing a coach beyond 65mph will drop your mileage more dramatically as compared to more hp and torque.

This week I put the motorcycle in the back of our Dakota pickup (an additional 700 lbs) and it made no difference in mileage.

I agree with Dave, its not the increase in HP that makes a difference in milage, its the drag from aerodynamics (or lack it it) and pulling extra weight on hills. With the larger torque engine you are applying less throttle so they come out fairly even.
The newer coaches are taller and heavier, but they have made some effort in aerodynamics and the new electronic fuel controls have helped.

With a 380HP and a coach big enough for a tag, I wouldn't expect much if you do any hill climbing.

P.S. IF it will climb at all

Just went to a video site and looked at the coach. It's nice. Just needs a 425 or 450 ISL.

Ok, so we had a 2008 Tiffin 42' Phaeton tag for over three years - put 34,000 miles on it. It had the (then) Cummins ISC 360 / 1050. Now we have the AC Revolution with the 450 / 1250 with about 7,500 miles on it. Same tow vehicle. Everywhere you go from Ontario is South so you have to go through the (small) mountains to get anywhere. I see no difference in fuel mileage yet - about 7.5 mpg in both. However, our Revolution accelerates like crazy compared to the Phaeton, both from a dead stop and when passing. Once you've got your cruise set at 65 mph I don't think the coach cares whether it has 350 or 550, until you ask it to pass, uphill, in a hurry!
Seriously though, if I was considering the Discovery today I would look very closely at the Fleetwood 42' Providence. Exact same chassis, motor, transmission, rad, etc. as the Revolution for allot less money. Our dealer has two in stock that he wants out of to make room for 2012's. You get allot more build quality, features, and driveability with the Providence than with the Discovery, and you really have to drive them both to appreciate it. I would put this at the top of my list today if I were shopping again.
