Fleetwood Bounder Instrument Panel

I have a 2004 Fleetwood Bounder. Something keeps blowing the fuse for the guages on the instrument panel. Any ideas why this happens?

It won't do MACH 2, but I can get a sandwich and take a pee.

There are several fuses that feed thru the instrument cluster.

Look on pages 42 and 45 of the manual. What fuse is blowing?

If you haven't recently modified something that's causing the problem, , i.e. installed a radio, then I'm going to guess that fuse #14 is blowing.

Fuse #14 also supplies power the Overdrive (OD) button and light on the end of the transmission shift lever. The wires that run inside the shift lever are known to chafe and can short out. Try unplugging the shift lever electrical connector and see if the fuse still blows.

I was traveling a couple years ago when I discovered this and made a repair while on the road. Here is a short article with photos::

You may wish to install a new gear shift lever, I think they run about $50...

I'd just about bet money that its the OD button on the shift lever. Very common problem.

Pop the cover off the steering column, look for the small wire bundle that comes out of the shift lever, follow it down along the steering column shaft and unplug it. See if your fuse still blows..

If you decide to replace the entire shift lever. There is a Dorman replacement. for about $40. WARNING, There are many reports that the Dorman lever may be wired wrong. Its been reported that the 3 pin connector, you need to swap the two outside pins to get it to work correctly.

Let us know what you find.

This was the problem. I replaced the shifter and the problem appears to be fixed. I saw a bare wire that was shorting out the fuse.
