Chuck, This is an area that I just had problems. The alternator would work fine when cool,Note I did clean all the connections on the Alternator and Batteries.
When things got hot the alternator voltage would go up to 17+.
The alternator was disassembled,the regulator was removed and there where pit marks around the area of the mounting screws,on the metal heat sink.
When the alternator got hot there was arcing at these points,causing the voltage to vary erratically and finely cause the system to fail!! only to work again when cool.
If this is your finding, could you post a picture showing the pitted areas in detail.
