One of the choices we like for a new RV is the Fleetwood Excursion. We have just returned from a RV Show and looked at several Providences but to my surprise they have a vinyl roof and not fiberglass. I went thru the vinyl with a fifth wheeler and have several "cuts" in the roof when I traded which I assumed was from limbs etc. Can anyone give any feedback on the vinyl type roof and why Fleetwood would use this instead of fiberglass? On the surface this appears to be a showstopper!

When you say vinyl, what exactly do you mean? Our 2004 Southwind has a TPO roof. Its very hard and aside from getting dirty, it shows no wear at all.

I have learned it is TPO, any feedback on problems or good things to say about this type of roof?

We have 98 37' PA and its roof is as good as new, except for the color, No cuts, not even scratches...

I looked at the TPO roof on the Bounder I just bought, I don't see where there is a problem at all with it. Very well constructed/solid.

I never could understand the "anti" anything but fiberglass roof crowd, had EDPM rubber roofs for years, never a problem ever.

Hello Galena,
You'll have no issues with a TPO roof. Had it on couple Fleetwood RVs in our history. Definately withstands 'surface of the sun' temps we can register in southern California environments. One note: don't use any Home Depo/Loews type silcone products to seal add-ons. Use sealant specifically formulated for 'rubber' aka TPO roofs. Easily obtained at RV Dealership or Camping World.

We have had two Discoveries with the TPO roof and they were fine. If you want the Fibreglass roof you'll ahve to go up one more notch to Revolution.

We have had three motorhomes, 1st. with a rubber roof, 2nd. with TPO and the 3rd. with fiberglass.

The rubber roof (actually EPDM) developed bubbles and had spots and caused LOTS of black streaks down the sides of the MH. The TPO was much better, but did have some discoloring spots and some streaking. The current MH with a fiberglass roof is the easiest to clean but can be quite slippery. It actually may require more elbow grease as I'm told it should be waxed once a year. AND, it does produce some streaking on the sides of the MH, probably just from dirt.

What is TPO. Can it be sealed to prevent streaking on the sides and windshield?

A TPO roof should be fine and last for many years. I had a Bounder with an EDPM roof and I did hit a couple of low hanging branches and punctured the roof and had to patch the small holes with Eternabond tape. Also they are prone to black streaks on the sides and do require more maintenance with washing and sealing to prevent black streaks. I now have a fiberglass roof on my Revolution and I am really happy with it. I don't worry about low hanging branches and I use a wash and wax product on it when I wash my motorhome never have black streaks. Very low maintenance and easy to take care of.

Nothing wrong with the TPO, Especially thinking most of us will not keep a RV long enough to need a TPO or EPDM replacement. may be 20 years.
Like what was mentioned , fiberglass moves you up a price point or 2
